- Just Ask Susan?
A personal interview of HubPages Elite writer, Just Ask Susan! - Who is the Brightest Star in Texas?
With Barbergirl28
I discovered Barbergirl28 on HubPages almost immediately. Thank goodness! She is one of the hubbers that helped me learn to navigate the sometimes precarious waters of hub land. I read one of her hubs, "It's a Carwash For Your Feet!" and found myself laughing hysterically and I was thinking about how many times I have seen items for sale and wondered - who in the world would buy that?
I have to admit - I had never actually contacted a hub person before - so I wasn't sure exactly what would happen but I sent her an email. I asked her if she had ever considered doing a spoof on The Booty Pop. I was pretty sure that she might think that I was a little loco. Much to my surprise - she emailed me back! Now I was certain - she must be crazy too! And - she even offered to let me be the "interviewee" and she set the scene up. I paid close attention to how she spun the article, made it really funny, and the end result. It was a great learning experience for a very new hubber.
I have been learning from her ever since. Barbergirl is an excellent writer with diverse skills. Most of the time, I find myself laughing before I start reading her new articles and laughing at the end. You can check out her work for yourself - so lets find out just who is behind that Avatar!
What is your REAL name?
Stacy Harris.
Where were you born?
In a hospital.
(I seem to have a tendency to be drawn toward the sassy hub people - I guess I like a person with some attitude and this one has it)!
Stacy, just tell us where the madness started!
I was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I moved around a bit, living on the East Side of Green Bay and Bonduel. Around the 7th grade my parents bought their own house and we stayed there until I moved out.
Do you have any siblings?
I have three sisters, one older and two younger. Mythicalstorm is one of my younger sisters. My oldest sister and I share our birthday. She was born exactly two years before me.
How did you celebrate two birthdays on the same day?
I have never really had my own birthday. We always had a duel celebration with my family. My two younger sisters came along much later. I was used to being the baby of the family so it was a hard transition. They were about 10 years younger than me. I appreciated them much more as they got older. We are all much closer as adults.
What kind of student were you as a child?
I was known as a school girl by every classmate. I always had my homework done, was hardly ever sick and always the first to raise my hand. I never got suspended but I did skip school once. My friend's mom called us in sick so we could go shopping all day.
When did you join the service and what branch were you in?
I enlisted in the Army in 1997 although I didn't actually leave until July 6, 1998. I was in the delayed entry program through my high school. I didn't have to deal with the stresses of other high school seniors, like searching for scholarships, I already knew where I was going a year in advance.
How did your friends and family feel about your decision to enlist?
Before I enlisted I asked my boyfriend what he thought of the idea. I thought we might have a furture together. He acted as if he didn't care but I think he was just trying to play it cool and not hold me back. We broke up shortly after I enlisted.
As for my other family and friends, I am not sure how they felt about my leaving. Everyone said they would miss me, my mom cried but no one tried to stop me from going.
Did you like being in the Army?
I loved the time I spent in the Army. It was a great time to reinvent myself. No one knew me as the shy girl, the school girl or the goody two shoes. I suddenly became outgoing and I am not sure where it came from but I wasn't bothered by talking to strangers anymore.
How was boot camp?
Boot camp was stressful, I am not going to lie. It was also one of the best times in my life. There were a lot of tears and times when I felt as if it was too much and I wanted to leave. Overall, I think each and every individual who is physically capable should be required to go to Boot Camp.
I was shipped to Boot Camp immediately from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was put up in a hotel the night before and I had to get up early to fill out massive amounts of paperwork before raising my right hand.
Were you scared that night?
Yes. I met some people the night before and we got together and walked around Milwaukee. We were a bunch of strangers but we could really relate to each other. We gripped onto each other for dear life. We were off on a new adventure and scared.
Is that when you met Eli?
We met the first day that I got to Fort Drum, New York. It was my first active duty station. At that time I realized I had spent all my time in high school getting good grades and working. I didn't go on a lot of dates. I was relatively inexperienced in that area. I wanted to play the field and I wasn't looking for a relationship. He was just one of the many guys that I was hanging out with. I always got a long with the guys better than the girls. With the exception of two females all of my friends were male.
So you started dating later?
We hung out a lot in groups. Occasionally, we would go to the mall or watch T.V. He even took a 16 hour drive with me back home to Wisconsin so I would have a driving buddy. During the trip my air bags spontaneously exploded. I blame him for that. He spun the car around 180 degrees on the onramp of the highway. I drenched him with my water bottle. Apparently water got in the console which caused the air bags to explode. After that, neither of us wanted to drive so we called it a night and got a hotel room.
That night we talked about having feelings for each other. He sang, "I think I love you," by The Partridge Family, to me. It was romantic but I wasn't sure if I was willing to accept my feelings for him or his for me.
What did Eli do in the military?
He was an Air Defense Artillery Gunner. Basically, he was in charge of shooting planes out of the sky. He reenlisted when we were in New York and that is how we ended up in Fort Carson, Colorado. It was there that he decided to get out of the service.
Why did he decide to get out of the military?
It was a joint decision. There was some bad leadership. He got out just days before our first daughter was born.
When did you get out of the service?
In July, 2003. I had the option of reenlisting but I knew that I was going to be deployed if I did. with a one year old at home, I figured family was more important. I chose to get out for my daughter's sake. There are plenty of men and women who are strong enough to leave their families at home to fight for their country, I was not one of them.
How long were you in the military?
I was in for 5 years and was lucky enough not to have to deploy once. I had some medical issues (Scarred for Life) that I encountered while in the Army. This kept me from pursuing my miliary career any further. It held me back for promotions and still affects me today.
How many children do you and Eli have?
We have three children. Abigail Anne (Abby) is 9. Isabella Rose (Bella) is 6, and Maxamillion Jon (Max) is 1. None of the children were planned. I am a walking advertisement for ineffective birth control. My husband finally decided after we met our deductible it would be a perfect time for him to get a vasectomy. A year later, I was pregnant again. Hence, the name of our son Maxamillion - he really is one in a million!
I couldn't imagine my life without them so I guess it was just meant to be. I don't plan on having any more children - but apparently no one can control the situation!
Were you really a Barber?
Technically, I am a cosmetologist with strengths in barbering. I started cutting my husbands hair in 2000. In 2005, I went to cosmetology school. Looking back at old pictures, I can see that he should never have let me cut his hair. It looked horrible. Now - it looks great!
Did you like being a barber?
I loved it. I am not a very patient person, so I don't like the wait time for chemical services like permanent waves or color. i get bored. I would much rather cut hair and no offense to the females but males tend to tip better.
When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?
I am pretty sure that I was born with a pen in my hand. That would have been miserable labor! Seriously, I am not sure when the writer thing kicked in, maybe when I learned to write. When I was younger I always kept a journal. Later, around the fifth grade, my friends and I wanted to be singers. We tried to write songs. I'm not famous for my song writing so obviously that didn't go so well. The only audience we had were cows.
Many of your fans know that you were a Photojournalist in the Army - how did you like that job?
It was great. My husband likes to say that I wasn't a real soldier. I was a lower enlisted that had higher enlisted asking me for favors. I won several awards, and of course, I got to live my passion writing. I worked on weekly newspaper and was responsible for taking photographs, writing stories, making graphics - everything that went into making a newspaper.
If Drbj resurrects anyone again for an interview - who would you like it to be and why?
Elvis because he is a hunk of burning love - and he stole my blue suede shoes!
Do you play any musical instruments?
I play the vocal cords. Mostly karaoke style.
(I ask this question because I notice many writers have musical abilities. Austinstar answered that she plays the stereo. Maybe the direct correlation is sarcasm!)
And?
I played a little bit of the recorder and piano in grade school. When we got the option to to play in band class of course I jumped on the bandwagon. Get it? The BANDwagon?
I played the clairinet because my parents wouldn't let me play the trumpet. (No brass instruments!) So my options were the flute or the clarient. I played until I graduated from high shcool and it took me places I wouldn't have been able to go to otherwise. It was fun. Recently, I decided to learn the guitar (Tune Me A Guitar). I can play a crappy rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, but for the most part I just pretend I am a rock star. I am still learning so there is still hope I will play better in the future.
What are your future goals?
Future goals? Are we supposed to think that far in advance? Evenually I would like to publish a book. I started writing one and I am about 17 chapters into the story. I started re-editing and took a break from writing it though it's partially complete. For now, I am glad just to make it through the day with three kids and Eli to look after - somedays it's just shear madness!

This is awesome... Of course I knew pretty much everything, but it was still awesome. Although there is one mistake RHW... At one point it says she has two older sisters and one younger. It is actually two younger and one older. But this is great :-)

This was so much fun to read since both of you are 2 of my favorite people on HubPages. Awesome job RH...you too Stacy :)
Once again hit all the buttons and wish there were more to hit.
Ha ha - I loved doing the interview - it was a lot of fun and caused me to do alot of soul searching. I guess I didn't catch the sister thing though. I read it through right away before jumping in.
Thanks RealHousewife - you are the bomb! I am hitting all the buttons because you did such a great job! Like usual!
Ha ha - I can't believe you forgot the fruitcake part of the interview - that was the funniest part! LOL
great interview Real, you did an awesome job.
I guessed the wrong guy...bummer...
But love reading more about BBG. Sounds like you are a very happy person and your kids are adorable.
UP~ Awesome~ Funny~ I really enjoyed this girls. Nice job Kelly (& Stacy)! Great pics too.
I will admit - I did give you alot of information... I was assuming that it really was going to be my 15 minutes of fame... because it took 15 minutes to read everything that I wrote... lol
You did a great job... and I am glad to see how much fun people are having with this.
This is a great hub bringing to life the very real person behind the hubs she writes. You have done something quite spectacular here and are a shining example to us all. Thank you.
What a thorough interview! Thanks also to Barbargirl for sharing so much with us.
All I have to say is hey, I want my name on two of those pictures! I distinctly remember being responsible for those! And I missed the part where my name was skillfully dropped as the best friend you ever had to get you through the toughest military days of your life.... ;) ;)
Super interesting! And what a great idea for hubbing. I too find barbergirl to be funny and interesting. Being interviewed feels like being someone important. We are going to have to interview you next!
I love getting to know other hubbers this way! How much fun! And, barbergirl is among the MOST fun, just like Austin. This is great, Real! Up and AWESOME, of course. And the photos made it phenomenal!!!
Stacy, I have to say that I have SO much respect for you as a person - always have as a hubber, but I actually considered the military after high school, but alas, I was fat, so I set the dream aside...lol Looking at your pics made me a little wistful - and you know, when your right guy comes along - you just know - even if he's corny enough to sing a song to you by the Patridge Family!!! :-)
I am absolutely loving the response to this... Oh yeah - and Jen V - was one of my BFFs - she could tell you some stories I am sure. We used to hang out all day on Saturday and go rummage saling with her parents. Man did we have a blast.
I am totally going to have to agree with Austin... someone is going to have to step up to the plate and interview you! After all, you have exposed us so we have to get the down and dirty on you! LOL
@MO - thank you so much. I actually joined the military and was considered chunky. For most of my military career I had to be taped because I weighed too much. It was a constant stress on being in. That part sucked, but I am so glad that I went through with it. It was a ton of fun.
I just realized RHW - you didn't use any of my AIT "modeling pics" Ha ha - I was so ... suave... lol
Wow... A BIG round of applause to RealHouseWife and Barbergirl28.
In this BIG...WIDE..world...of...WEB...you both managed to find your confidante and a friend. Jai Ho !!
Now, I am getting all J :))
Ha ha - that is the brilliance of this hubpages.... you can always add! Now subtract - well, that is another story. Once it is out there...well, you can erase but it was already out there.
What - you can't kill everybody involved. Damn - where did I go wrong... and here I was offing everybody that just got to close (this would be a great time for that sarcastic font!) LOL
Still need to interview you! Has anybody started on the process - or should I jump in!
Stacy just do it! lol!!! My gosh you guys how not FAIR :( Gimmie a few days to be sick and entertain my other net friends! LOL.. It was cool seeing Stacy in her Army attire! How cool, I wanted her to do a hub and see them ALL lol!!
Anyway, oh.. I found this on ACCIDENT! LOL. ::SNIVEL:: Show up late to my funeral, as I'll be the last to be there anyway haha! :( ugh lol!!! +O+ Accolade!!! :)
Man, after a week back to work, I'm ready to pick out my casket. Being off for 5 weeks really spoiled me even if I was mostly sick the whole time.
I've just got so much to do and no time to do it in. Carp!
Still this is a fun hub. I tried to join the AF, but I had FLAT FEET! Well, WTF does flat feet have to do with flying a plane?
Then I wanted to be a homicide detective, but the boys wouldn't let the girls play back then.
Playing with blood was my third and final choice. It's a freaking living is all! I should go write a novel.
::raises hand raises hand before Stacy gets here:::: LOL
Austin* One cannot march with flat feet! Even though you wanted to fly an airplane, you still gotta go through boot camp and march til ya think you're gonna die, but that is why no flat feet, it's too painful on the back n' legs. Kinda like being off work for your vaca lol, only you'll get back in the swing! :)
And DEFINITELY write a novel!!! If you have a story, get GOING! :)
I have a thing in the works! Actually just added/tweaked a bit yesterday! But Austin* Should if she has one in her head! Get it out! :)
Hey I get ya, all I care about is if the pilot can LAND ok LOL (living my Military ya worry about that sort of things, and get angry of gas prices being crazy, but at the same time LOVING the blue Angel's show) lol..
Well, you know, we can't incriminate ourselves. I have to at least be suspicious of some of my early transfusion attempts. Hard to say if the patient died because of me or because they were really, really sick at the same time. As far as I know I haven't killed anyone. But who is counting?
Now it might be different if you asked, "How many people would you LOVE to kill?" And how many pieces would you cut them up into?
::looking over there::: I never counted, nope, not me! If a plane drops on my ex's house it wasn't men, now if a house lands on his it could be me LOL Austin* is totally innocent of it all!!! (well, that I know of) *evil grin* hehe.. j/k
Ha ha - actually, Kat's reasoning behind the flat fleet sound pretty good. I don't know... the military has its wierd quirks. Eli couldn't fly in the Air Force or the Marines so he stuck the middle finger up to them and went in the Army, to ironically.... shoot down airplanes. He goes from flying to wanting to shoot them down... lol
As for killing anybody... my motto in Basic or AIT or somewhere I don't remember was Shoot to Kill... ha ha - but we never did. I killed a little green silhoute... lol But that was luck. My aim sucked. And grenades... that was a worse story. I couldn't throw one of those to save my life. So, I guess even if I wanted to - they would be pretty lucky to come across me. My aim is that bad... lol
However, I might have killed a few with my bad jokes...lol
Oh great, my desktop pc just blew up! Off to Best Buy for a new one!
Yea, they did tell me that I couldn't march on flat feet. True, I have the flattest feet ever. I've had a podiatrist comment on how flat they are. Still, as a teen, I walked everywhere and my feet never bothered me. Flat feet came in handy for swimming for sure. Maybe I should have joined the Navy!
But it was the AF or nothing. On to Homicide. Back in those days it was just unheard of for a woman to work in homicide. Women were barely allowed in to do clerical work! I could have tried anyway, but it was just too much to fight. I thought I might go into forensics, but blood banking suited me just fine.
RealHo, you may have something there about men aiming better than women. I have mad skills at some things, but aiming isn't one of them. I have killed a few targets like BG, but wasn't that great at it. I just went to the gun range to meet guys. They just love trying to help a woman aim!
Well, enjoy the day girls. I'm off to shop!
I wanted to be a Navy pilot. Then I got classes in the fourth grade and that dream was dashed...lol That was, of course, before Lasik surgery. Ah, well. If I'd been a Navy pilot, I'd have never met the Almighty Geek (Detective CHF)...lol So, I guess it all worked out like it should. :-) And, I'd never have been a nun.
This was a fun hub to read, RH, look for the TV networks to be contacting you soon for an interviewing gig. Your questions were perfect to elicit the most fascinating information from your subject, Stacy.
And thanks for the link to my Al Capone hub. Elvis IS on my list; just haven't reached him yet. I did hear him singing 'Jailhouse Rock,' though so he must not be too far away. Rated up, m'dear.
Eli couldn't fly because of his vision. I guess you can't use corrective vision if you want to fly because of the head gear. Wait - isn't that what contacts are for... or what happens if while you are already flying your vision goes out... like I said - quirks!
As for swimming - I probably need flat feet. I tried swimmig last night... but I tried doing it the right way (cause I can't keep my head under water. So, I learned two things.
1. Swimming like that leads to the potentail of drowning myself. My hair gets in my mouth and then I start choking and so I get about 4 feet and have to stand up! LOL
2. I can't swim straight - I ran into a wall. So, I might have gotten a possibly concusion if I could actually swim fast. I guess that means I should just keep with the doggy paddle! LOL
I wanted to join the Navy back in 1974 but when they sent someone to talk to me about it I was told that more than likely I would not be allowed on the ships full-time. I was devastated as I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps. There went that dream. Shortly after that they started to allow women, guess I missed the boat.
lol about the shooting range! I still got the 22 my dad taught me to shoot with! It was fun for a 9yr old to brag about at school (back in the say cps wouldn't be on our ass) lol. But the shooting range thing was funny because my son wanted me to try out his AK-47 so off we went! At first couldn't figure out why the fake head (not supposed to use anything resembling a human but we were up north in MI) wasn't falling off! I mean we put a few magazines through that thing! When everyone put down our weapons we figured out WHY.. duh.. the bullets were going through them so fast, yeah we'd put a LOT into it, but it was styrafoam so going righ through. Then LUCKILY just as we reloaded, he almost pushed me back to hard into the weeds/tall grass.. I was like WHAT YA DO THAT FOR.. a black van had pulled up, and 2 guys with dark glasses and clothes got out! LOL.. He was like "sorry ma, just incase it wasn't good".. I'm like can't ya just hand me a gun dammit LOL we had like 6 Full mags ready! Then he reminded me they were in his name LOL. Yeah so, it was fun tho. First time I shot an AK. Dad didn't want us having semi automatic's or double barrel shot guns. But my kid had a plethora of guns. He has a ccw but I don't like pistols cos of the kick, he has a glock and a few others but I almost hit the roof when he'd sold my dad's only pistol. But as for meeting men, yeah... a shooting range, and a golf range LOL.. both reasons to "help" buy putting their arms around you! Hey I coulda fakes it if I hadn't of found Scott. hehe.. my ex always let me play around with his double barrel. Here there's more ppl WITH than without, and ALWAYS a man willing to take you to the forest.. (not as many ranges when most people here hunt and seasons are longer.) Hey Austin* that could be a good tip for moving to the south?? LOL
Stacy's birth year.. ah, one year after my graduation but I'M NOT EXACTLY TELLING MY AGE HERE.. cos my brain hasnt' caught up with body ugh LOL
Missed the boat!!! Susan, so cute! :-) I have a hard time swimming with my head under water - and I'm an okay, but not great swimmer, Stacy. Thankfully, I could probably survive a shipwreck if need be, provided land was close enough.
I loved the missed the boat comment. I try not to get on the boat in the first place - it seems safer if I dont have any flippers.
As for Elvis - my aunt was a big Elvis fan. I love his music too. Maybe they should have played him on MTV... lol... after all, he was The KING - lol
Oh yeah - and no pictures of me swimming - I am not really good at it so I just look like a fish who didn't figure it out... lol
I tried that once... damn arms were too big! LOL - maybe I should have gotten the extra large size. Oh yeah - and putting them on your forearms are just not as effective! LOL
RH,
I'm a programmer. Want me to post some code? :)
Stu
Stu, apply for programming of this site! grrr it FLIES up to where you DON'T want to read from! I like to read my last post! Oh and you can't post code in here cos it will cut off the at the greater than less than sign! It thinks it's code. lol.
Pink swim rings are funny I need some so when I'm drowning at the beach the hot lifeguard can come and save me. (although the water does get deep for a ways out) hehe.. LoL
Gag me with a spoon! I went out to get Bob a new computer, came home, set it up, and NO INTERNET! Or phone either! Not even cell phone! And the world wasn't supposed to end until tomorrow!
Finally back online.
Missed the boat! Love it. Bob did not miss the boat. He was in the navy for 4 years. A destroyer based out of Pearl Harbor. What a rough time he had, eh?
My gun of choice would be a revolver, although I used to have a Colt Commander Auto. Bad kick, but would it ever blow targets away!
Swimming is my thing. I should have been born as a dolphin. Maybe next time!
The bird that cusses? That would be you. LOL
I tried that too - but when I was an adult. I couldn't walk on water and I still can't swim... lmao!
Katharella,
I agree; I would like to apply HTML tags to alot of my posts (bolding, underlining, etc.). Also being able to post pics and videos would be really nice too.
Stu
barbergirl,
I hear Oblabber is offering walking on water classes at the WH. You can apply at http://obama/worshipme.
Stu
Stu, that is just too funny. I think I will occupy myself with parent and me swimming classes this summer... for my 18 month old of course! LOL
Funny article which is well shared.
Such fun to read, thank you for sharing.
A great read and thank you for sharing.
I now look forward to reading many more of your hubs also.
Take care
Eiddwen.
...what a lovely meeting of two great minds and it's tells us as much about the interviewer as it does with the subject of the interview - so lucky that you both met each other and so lucky for your readers too that you are both so talented and fun to read ......
So bbg was a 46Q? Where did she go to AIT? :-) That sounds like a cool MOS. Lol... We should call her Joker like Matthew Modine in Full Metal Jacket. :-) I think he was the Marine Corps equivalent in that movie.
I'll be interested to see her response on that. Most military acronyms are easily defined with google, these included I think. Just add "military" or "army" to the search.
This was a pretty interesting hub. :-)
LOL - I will only except joker as a nickname if I can use the crazed smile like on batman... oh yeah... and the makeup! LOL... I want to look good and feel great! Sorry I couldn't resist.
As for military lingo - I fear my mind is leaving me. It has been awhile since I have been out so my memory is starting to fade. I think it is age. This morning I got up early... not because was awake - but because my hips are starting to hurt me. See what happens when your in the military - you age faster! LOL
How old ARE you??? :-) You can blow that one off but I think you won't.
Umm, the Joker in Batman probably FELT great but he LOOKED evil! Lol... I believe you should rethink that one!
You said in another hub's comments you WERE a 46Q (photojournalist) right? And AIT (Advanced Individual Training) is the school you went to in order to train on your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) which is 46Q. Ring a bell? Hmm???? Ft. Drum was for Basic training right? Where was the next military school you went to Specialist??? :-P
First of all I would like to thank barbergirl28 for serving our country and commend RealHousewife on the great interview. I'm looking forward to following both of you.
Ah - you guys are making me blush... LOL... And yes - such great times. Just think... we will get to hang out again in February when I swing on by! :)
Ah, so it was the Taco Bell Cup Guy! I had no idea! What a great interview and follow up to a suspenseful story! You guys make a great writing team! Awesome job! Voted across and sharing!
JSMatthew~
I am way late coming in on this one but have to say you two are a kick! A fabulous idea that shows both personalities; two great hubbers BTW. It's really great that you met in person too! Funny how you form bonds with some people through hubpages without even meaning too. Effie and I have found out we're like clones in another world. REALLY enjoyed this hub. Pressed all the buttons and SHARING!
Kelly, you wrote a really good interview on Stacey! I think this was well organized and brought out her best characteristics! Nice job! Voted up!!!
wow...loved reading about this wonderful lady. She has many talents amongst being a beach body coach and Kelly you have done great justice by writing beautifully about her.
voted up with interesting button and sharing it across!
This is a great interview - I really enjoyed getting to know Stacy better!
Wish there were more buttons like super, fantabulous, great, " I liked it so much that I fell off the bed reading"
Really great interview with certainly one of the most fine hubbers I have come across here!
Great work Real!
This is awesome Kelly! Now I feel like I know Barbergirl much better. Voted up and Shared! Take care, Kelley

Ha ha - love it! I don't even know this girl... She sounds pretty cool ;)
Like usual, you did a wonderful job! I couldn't have asked for a better write up!
