Perez Hilton a/k/a Mario Armando Lanadeira, Jr., born March 23, 1978 in Miami, Florida is the most profific blogger in the world. With an estimated 9 million hits every day on the web he is the most popular blogger globally. Hilton jokes and says he got the idea for his blog name because he was at an event and people kept saying, "don't leave, Paris Hilton is coming!" He said she never showed up. On the other hand - Perez Hilton was born.
Hilton began his career as a hobby. He blogged about his life and everyone else's just for fun. He was into the celebrity culture and soon he began to gain a following. Perez admits that he was young and angry. He was well known for "outing" gay celebrities and posting photographs on his website that he would manipulate by using his famous white marker to embellish his own funny designs.

While Hilton's claim to fame is his negativity and celeb gossip, his reputation is that of the most hated blogger in history. His often lewd and lascivious behavior capitulated him to stardom. Everyone claims to hate him but click, click, click! It is a well known fact that some celebrities send him the photographs and tips so that he will write about them. They understand the power in numbers. Bad publicity is still publicity.
In addition to being a hot blogger he is a freelance writer and television personality. He has made appearances on The Soprano's, Flab to Fab, The View, MTV's Cribs, Mad TV, The Martha Stewart Show, and Tosh O as well as many others. He has been featured on the Howard Stern Show and has appeared in music videos.

If you haven't heard, Hilton is in progress of shedding his ill reputed personality. Hilton admits that he has gone through many changes since he became an online hit. During an interview with Howard Stern he explains that he wants to use his fame to make positive changes. Hilton has faced his personal demons in therapy and has emerged with a new attitude.
Age has played a huge part in the transformation and Hilton says he realizes his actions have a huge impact on a now younger generation. He says that if he has a personal issue with a celeb he will call them out on it in private.
Hilton has endorsed many good causes. A few of the things that he would like to raise awareness and support:

Hilton currently maintains 5 blogs. I have linked them above. If you check out his video it is pretty convincing that he wants to change. I, for one, believe him. I want to support our fellow blogger, human and importer of often hilarious comic relief.
It bothers me that everyone says they hate him though they contradict their own convictions by offering obvious support and love in the number of lightening bolt clicks. Isn't it all those inquiring minds feeding the fuel? Begging for dirt? How callous of us to encourage him to keep using his voice to entertain our dirty little minds and then claim we do not like him. Haven't we used him to sow the seeds that disparage?
Hilton's writing and blogging skills were in supply and demanded by his audience. Hilton has expressed a desire to grow in a new and more positive direction and I want to see that change. I have the good sense to know that power in numbers will help make the changes that he stands for. I applaud his strength to face the world and ask for our acceptance and support in helping him make this change. I am excited about the causes he is involved in and especially his support for at risk, disadvantaged youth.
Hilton, at the end of the day is like many of us, he loves his dog Teddy, his mother and he wants to effect positive change for the future. While he will maintain his site and his sense of humor, his goal is to partner with a large entity in the future and I hope to see that happen.

I LOVE Perez Hilton - he's made such a huge name for himself. I enjoy listening to him on the radio stations doing the countdown :) His voice is one I will always recognize even without seeing his face. I will admit, I never in a million years thought he was the same age as me. I thought he was so young! Great hub RHW

I feel bad for Perez because everyone wanted him to sacrifice his reputation for a good laugh - I am not sure he would have gained the fame and notariety as quickly at all! So I feel like 9 million people use him every day and deny they love him:) lol

Hi Ardie - I knew you were a cool hubber:) lol I do too - I was all involved in looking at the gossip tabloids too and I wanted to know what the rumours were all about. I think working in a hospital setting and ER kind of warped me - I really had to learn to laugh even under terrible circumstances so I have a warped sense of humor anyway. I think when he draws his little depictions on his photos they are hilarious! But he is turning a new leaf now! He is still gonna doodle on the photos - I guess it is just gonna be cleaner humor!
Hey Sunshine - yep - he is going to try to use his influence for the better now:) lol I think he probably would have rather done that all along but like everyone says bad news travels much quicker than good news and there is a reason for that:) We like the dirty laundry!
Ok... I am going to bow my head down in shame... I will admit that I am probably one of the few that have not actually caused his popularity. Why - because this is the first time I have ever heard of him. But, I am glad that he is taking the initiative to change and keep things in a positive light. Although, people are drawn to negativity. I wonder if his fame was from his bad attitude and if his numbers will drop once he changes. If you grow an audience while being positive it will stay with you... if you grow an audience from negativity, they might leave you when you change. Look at Howard Stern... I can't imagine him being anything but who he is... positive and negative stuff combined!

I hadn't heard of him. I don't read about celebrities (well, pretty rarely) and I really would not have liked something with a negative attitude. Thanks for the note. Good for him to change his ways. People do seem to like that negative attitude though. I stopped watching the Oscars years ago because I couldn't stand Joan Rivers carping on and on about other people.

Hi That Grrl - Yeah negative attitudes work both ways. They draw lots of attention but it doesn't leave a good flavor. I totally agree about Joan Rivers! The funny thing is - I used to like her! I don't know she just does not seem as funny anymore.

This is a cool idea for a hub. I used to read him back in his super-mean days and eventually stopped because I felt so bad for just giving him that attention. I saw him talking about his change on Ellen and I'm glad he did it. There's too much snark and negativity online about everyone, so I'm glad he's making a conscious effort to change his actions. Susan - I wonder if he isn't as popular in Canada? But he was a dirt digger and to be honest - you are way too sweet and nice to have followed him:) lol. He was very hateful and outrageous! His antics were funny sometimes and he might have suffered from being a lot too honest. I think the lesson he is learning is "just because you CAN - doesn't mean you should!" lol. Well let's keep an eye on him now and see if he does make these changes!

I never followed Perez Hilton because of the negativity he spewed so relentlessly into the universe. While it made him famous, it seemed mean spirited and I don't subscribe to that.
It's great to hear he's recognized that his behavior needed to change to the positive, and I wish him all the best but it's going to take a lot to get me to follow him...
That Grrl you really haven't been missing anything special, we're probably all better off for not knowing or following Perez and his negativity. Hopefully in time I'll be able to visit his blog without feeling sick to my stomach...

I did not approve of what he wrote but oddly - I still read it along with so many other people he crashed a network! Lol. I mean - honestly he wouldn't have been very well known if he hadn't been such an outright jerk! I guess I feel that we really created that monster and I think about what it must have done to him to receive such mixed messages from everyone who basically paid him!
So - I did not follow him before but I want to now. I want to give this guy a chance to redeem himself and use his power to help in good causes that may not get attention without him:)

You know - I think I just realized something... I have never really been into celebrity gossip which might be the reason why I have never heard of him before. But as you can see... you have really given us a very informative hub about a guy who is changing his ways.
P.S. I think people dig up dirt because they are closet gossipers. They don't want people to think of them in that way, but they still want to know what others are saying ;)

Yes for those who haven't heard of him - lets see what happens! I checked in on him today and he reported some beebs gossip (but it was fasion related:) lol So now he is going to allow celebs to still use his site for promotion and fun...but in a positive light.
I think you are right about the closet gossipers too - because we do not see population explosion on hubs that are like "how to grow a perfect rose garden" lol just sayin'....the proof is in the pudding:) All he had to do was toss a star's name out there and people were tripping themselves trying to get to the computer!

When I first read this title I was like... Real, what kind of information did you manage to dig up this time? I have never heard of Perez Hilton, but you did a great job outlining some interesting background which allowed me to learn a bit with in a few minutes. Then the transformation you spoke of makes it seem even more drastic! Another interesting and nicely done hub :-)
P.S. Sorry about the random comment the other day about my bad news. It wasn't that big of a deal after I calmed down and thought things through a bit. I'm sure you know how the instant you hear something that is bad you might over react to the seriousness of it, but then after planning out a process and thinking everything through it doesn't seem quite as bad. Perez is a real interesting guy...I feel sorry for him because he was used on so many levels for everyone else entertainment...then everyone pretends they don't like what he's dishing out. Kinda cowardly on everyone's part - including his but at least he admits it! Lol. But I'm all about giving people a chance to change so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I like a person who tells it straight up - and sometimes things can be funny without people being so darn serious. Take Kathy Griffin - I think she's hilarious and I love her humor - she's a wild card. I think she can get a little too nasty sometimes but hey - she makes me laugh so hard I'll forgive her:). Great hub approached with an open mind. I have seen him in the public eye. I just don't get on that band wagon of bashing people because they are different. You present some of his great attributes. Well done. There is more than enough hate in this world and everyone deserves a chance!
