What's the Frequency Kenneth?

In physics - frequencies are the number of cycles completed per unit of time. Scientists who study the brain utilize Electroencephalography (EEG) to study the vibrations or the waves the brain is emitting. The frequency of the occurrence of the waves in units of time are called cycles per second (cps). The cells in our bodies are constantly producing tiny electrical signals that flow in a current using action potentials along with a magnetic field.
During an EEG, electrodes are placed on the scalp and they can measure brain activity from wake to sleep. When the brain is awake, the waves are very fast. As the brain drifts into sleep, the waves slow significantly through stages. The deeper the sleep, the slower and wider the wave.
When a sleep study begins, the brain waves can be seen slowing down as the subject goes from wake to sleep. Exactly which moment of time the brain slips into the unconscious is a mystery. For the sake of a consistent scientific test, sleep is marked on the record after three consecutive minutes of stage one sleep. Then the brain is at play, going where it wants to go and seeing what it wants you to see, perhaps.
Communication occurs in many forms. Cell phones, radio, television, body language, written word and language. All of these forms of communication are based on signals or frequencies on some level. Cell phones, radios and television operate on radio frequencies. Body language - signals that we send out knowingly or unknowingly. Written and spoken language - also based on the frequency of letter and sound occurrences and patterns.
Is there an ESP frequency?
In 1958, researcher, Robert Monroe was experimenting with sonic frequencies on the brain when he discovered the state of awareness called Out of Body Experience (OBE). A state of awareness that is separate from the physical body. OBE is now a generic term that is used to describe "unexplainable mind states." Basically, he discovered that each side of the brain is operating at slightly different frequencies. When he experimented with recordings that were of two different frequencies such as 200 in one ear and 208 in the other, the brain did its own math and interpreted only the 8 cps difference. This seemed to induce a trance like state. It is thought that he learned to synchronize the two sides of the brain.
Some scientists believe that when our brain is operating at a 5 - 7 cps frequency, behaviors that can't be easily explained occur such as dreaming, ESP, out of body experiences for example. It is thought that this is where the conscious and the unconscious mind overlap. The place in time where the brain is divided between wake and sleep. So is it a stretch to believe that psychic phenomena can happen during this mental state?
Binaural beat entrainment is the latest thing being used to achieve a mental state much like meditation. It can be music that simulates a beat that lulls you into a relaxed state and allows you to train your brain so that you can teach the brain to succumb to this state with ease. There are some that suggest that you can become more adept with psychic abilities by practicing with these types of tools. The key words from believers seem to be, "learn to tap into your psychic brain wave frequency".
Who is Kenneth?
October 4, 1986, news anchor Dan Rather was minding his own business, just walking down the street when he was attacked by two men. During the violent assault - one of the assailants was yelling, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"
Rather denied having any idea who or why he was assaulted.
In 1994, the band R.E.M. couldn't resist making fun of the bizarre attack and released the track, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"
It wasn't until 1997 that a man named William Tager confessed to the crime. He was serving time for killing another NBC employee. Tager blamed the media for beaming signals into his mind. He thought if he could just get the correct frequency he could block the media from the messages he was receiving. Tager also thought that he was from the year 2265 and he mistook Dan Rather for a Kenneth who lived in his little parallel universe.
Tager said that he was a criminal in his universe who had been sent to earth on the first time travel mission. When he returned to the future successfully he would be granted a pardon and freed. As if the case wasn't strange enough, it is rumored that when Tager's brain was examined something was in his head.
Are you out of your mind?

What is on the horizon?
Recently, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have been studying the frequencies of brain activity to gain more knowledge about its inner workings. Electrocorticography is the placement of electrodes directly on the brain to monitor the activity in more precise measures. It is largely used to detect seizure activity during a brain mapping process but with permission from patients doctors have been using it to study larger portions of the brain in attempts to decode the activity.
"Analysis of brain function normally focuses on where brain activity happens and when," says Eric C. Leuthardt, MD. "What we have found is that the wavelength of the activity provides a third major branch of understanding brain physiology."
One of the things researchers are looking at is the activity in the brain when it fades into the unconscious during anesthesia and the return to consciousness. So far they have found that certain frequencies in the brain are changed during anesthesia and some remained unchanged, it could be possible that these are networked in the memory circuit.
Is it possible that our brains can be entrained? Is it possible that people could experience extrasensory perception when the brain is operating at certain frequencies?

Sorry to hear about your sister Kath! That's unimaginable. My mom was an RN who specialized in head trauma. She actually worked with the brain mapping procedure. It is so fascinating, isn't it?
I haven't seen Strange Days but maybe I'll watch it tonight - I love Juliet Lewis! She is such a genius, funny and smart. So insane with most of the characters she plays. One of my all time favorite movies is Kalifornia. What a great flick! Today is the last day of school for the kids and I am so ultra happy! I can watch movies until the sun comes up:)
No worries on the sis she don't know who I am. But yeah it was amazing how they could control her with that machine! I remember the chords coming out of her head, and she could flip them over her shoulder like she had long hair and we'd laugh (when she knew laughter) and well, other than that it was a grueling time, mom was a mess. I was the only one who could stay awake the hours to watch her.
OH.. see Strange Days.. if you like Kalifornia, you'll like it, they'r not alike, but JL.. she is amazing in it. You know she has her own band right? Juliette and the Licks? She actually has a band and sings in the movie! It's a dark kinda strange movie.. but super good. Good enough I had to buy it! ESP is fascinating as was this hub but then so is the human brain. We appear to learn more about it every day. RH - you mentioned that William Tager's "brain was examined (and) something was in his head." Besides his brain? Awaiting the fascinating, I'm sure, answer.
Drbj - yes - supposedly there was something abnormal in his head! No one said what though so I say it's rumor. But maybe it could explain his odd behavior? I'm still trying to find the answer and track down whether or not he was released from prison. The last record I can find said he was denied parole in 2007 but was up for parole in 2010. Dan better figure out that frequency! Lol. I will post updates if I find answers.

One of my favourite topics is the Physics of vibration and I find it fascinating how the frequency of the vibration of the atoms that you are made of determines whether you are a tree or a human.
I have read all about Robert Monroe and I even used his products to check out the whole mind entrainment thing. You have explained well the binaural beats which is what it is based on but I used it to see how useful a tool it would be in relation to my work. I achieved wonderful results but found that a man called Michael Mackenzie has developed a more refined way to access the states of mind you describe in your hub. And yes binaural beats does help you develop psychic abilities but that is actually a distraction if you are in pursuit of truth as I feel you are so I suggest that the pursuit of psychic abilities be a bonus if they occur but not an end in themselves.
I would love to develop psychic abilities then I could be rich and rule the world! Ah ha ha ha ha! Ok seriously - I really could see where that would work. I don't find it unusual the two hemispheres of the brain vibrate at slightly different speeds - it would fit with the fact that our bodies are not exactly symmetrical either. So by using the two different frequencies you could sort of harmonize the brain. It just makes sense to me. When you run an EEG the electrodes actually are compared to a reference point - Grid 1 and Grid 2 let's say, the machine compares the two signals, deduces the difference and that is the size of the frequency of the wave.That is as simple an explanation I can think of - so it sounds really familiar when reading Monroe's theory, right?

Resonance is the idea. By sending two different vibrations into each ear the brain focuses on the difference and that is the principle. So an wave that we cannot hear becomes audible. It is genius. The man was a genius.
after reading what marellen said I think some people may not understand that it is not a machine but a way of hearing. I think perhaps the story of the guy fining something stuck in his brain has made some people imagine that you are talking about implanting stuff in your brain.
Hi Marellen! Thanks! I wouldn't use the mind machine either;). It's probably like a hairdryer or something;) just the language they used on their page is ridiculous. Like - "Less stress = coherence". Now who woulda thunk it? Lol!
I do think that there are types of ESP that are real - I just don't think we fully understand anything in those areas of science. I often wonder if some people do tap into psychic energy without realizing it - for instance during sleep? Or when twins have those episodes of telepathy, for instance. I don't think we can just summon it up when we want to - yet:)

Mo- he was a character! You really would have liked him and he would have liked AND respected you. He was very open minded and he loved intellectual debate. He didn't get offended, he welcomed other perspectives and he wasn't ashamed of his own. I can still picture him, rocking back on his heels, laughing and jingling change in his pocket. His habit was to listen while he turned the change in his pockets over in his hands.

Lol! That is an what we would call and extended EEG. Used for research and suspected seizure activity. We hated doing those! Techs would argue about who had to do the next ext EEG hook up:). You had to measure in precise centimeters - and it would be obvious to the trained eye if the measurements were off. That's a waste of 1000's of dollars so it made you nervous until the next day when the neurologists would review the record. The brain waves would not appear synchronous if the placement was wrong. And I had to do kids! Usually they were not children who liked to sit still:(

RH: I can only understand how much you guys must have hated setting up the EEG's because of the placements. When I had to watch "M"(the ex-sis) go through them, I just watched with amazement of how precise everything had to be. Then I knew what she went through when I had to go through it. What is scary is the fear they're going to find something out of the norm. -Your Grandpa would of been great at my school, although you had a proper way of being taught new words, mine was punishment. That's another reason I just don't like using anything I don't have to. If we combed out hair or so much as glanced out the window, out of the dictionary, we'd hear a RIP, and that meant (usually me and my friend) someone was going to be writing every word on the page, and being tested on it! When it was MATH class. Needless to say I spent more time learning words than learning math.
But back to the EEG, I don't know if it's the same kind of mapping of the brain, but once they are going to do a surgery it has to be mapped from inside with the electrodes directly ON the brain. But that is how they map out the surgery area. If they didn't, something would be damaged and lost for life.
About the OBE, there's never mention of this when it's something people WANT to do, but just as in the story of poor Sybil, her brain branched off into different actual people, thus, the multiple personality disorder that she had. There's another part to the OBE and astral projection is when a child is abused, those are the two forms of escape from the trauma that happens, although they're not willing subjects of course. :( don't everybody gasp ::gasp:: but there is a certain porn actress that does this on purpose because it's her way of escaping while she is being filmed, and I heard one guy (who I then gave respect to) that said he would never watch a porno she was in because he could see she was doing that, and he felt that she had learned to do it so easily because it was obvious (to him anyway) that as soon as the scene would begin, she was able to remove herself until physical pain was overbearing. I had to view what he was talking about because I was already on his case that most girls in these video's are victims of abuse already. So I saw her, and I saw her do it. And sure enough when it got to a point she could not hold herself out any longer, she literally was like.. fainting but awake enough to say "I have to stop I'm going to faint" but she still was not fully aware of anything other than what was going on was more than she could mentally bear. I couldn't believe my eyes but they left the camera rolling and she dropped to the floor, and no body touched her (which made me think they knew the had to wait for her to finish the shoot) then she stood up as if nothing happened and smiled and got back to business. I was so sick not only were tears streaming, I got physically SICK to my stomach because there was 1. No way to stop it. 2. No way to find her and get her out of that. and finally 3. No way to make her believe this was not the only thing she ever knew and there could be a better life out there for her IF I were ever able to find her.
When I was very young and started to learn about lucid dreaming (in the 60's) and OBE'es nothing was ever said about such. The older I got and the more I learned that abuse actually HAPPENED, I realized that sometimes when I met people I KNEW they had been there, but had memory of incidences, but they weren't going to face them. I spoke with a man who did therapy for men who had been arrested for abusing children and I learned from him that some of the greatest, hardest working, intelligent -no idle time- people, male and female people were among the most highly abused adults he'd ever known. Some of the best doctors, highly trained technicians and people in the medical field were the best because it's so demanding, and there is little time to go home, rest and say.. read a book of fiction or watch a silly movie or play a word game. Those things leave their mind with time that a thought or memory could slip back into their minds, and they could not allow that or it would disrupt their perfect life. Needless to say those of you who seem to know me must realize not only did I horribly give him a piece of my mind in even trying to help those men who repeatedly abused, but I told him he wasn't worthy of the plaque on his wall. Ok, well, he began a quote to me in which I finished for him. Freud once said that the abuser is not one to be hated but to be (then I said LOUD) PITIED!!!? I have no pity, and while I understand Freud said that, because he believed your first trauma was being born and brought from the comfort of the womb into a cold big world, that these children had their childhoods stolen. I gave him the argument that it is no excuse for them to "get help" for what they knew, at the time, was ruining a life, despite a crime that's not even relevant to the facts of a life being torn apart and causing them to pass along more abuse of either the same or over protection (remember I brought up helicopter mom's, they were abused mothers, thus over protective.)
So, the whole out of body and astral projection topic makes me ill. For some reason, it makes me wonder if far beyond any of our years if this wasn't the beginning makings of WHY the ESP began and branched off into a paranormal thing when if it's really possible, while they are out they are experiencing what else is going on at another place in time, or even in the instance of a parallel universe or if that is the reasons that they are thought to be.
Sorry for the book.. just an aspect to the paranormal questions. Why didn't someone know, why didn't someone stop it, if they had ESP then, then why was no one there to intervene or stop what was going on.. there's just so many unanswered and never can be answered questions about it. Other than that of the norm, like WHY did my ex call me after 4 months to beg for me to come back after I had driven 25 miles and was at his doorstep. Later to learn he was abused but not sexually abused. Just beaten, and always pushed aside after his mother died when he was 6. Food for thought I supposed.
Recording memories and erasing thoughts are right around the corner.. I would have to fuddle through my links to find the one that it is just around the corner, but they are in other countries implanting these into babies brains already.

Hi Mo! I know the first question is for RH but when my sister had hers, unless they changed the goopy stuff, it took her forever to get it out of her hair! But once she knew she was having the surgery my mom shaved her head because, well, they just don't send neurosurgeons to beauty school! :)
But no, I won't make a hub about that, I really don't have anything to add to it.. I think if people are interested in the aspect of ESP & OBE's, astral projection is a part of OBE's and that's pretty much where it stems from. Or me and Freud are were complete idiots (him longer than me cos he was older)LOL!!! Let's push that blame on him then ok! lol. I might make a hub on lucid dreaming though.. it's semi-related but different! I'm working on like 3 but just hit me this morning how dumb of me not to make one on being temporarily blind as I was for 7 years! lol I think.. I'm so glad to have my eyesight back and it's only been such a short amount of time I'm having a hard time staying focused, I missed so much! :)
RealHousewife, I find it amusing how so many people waste so much time trying to find a truth that has nothing to do with their personal lives.
While I understand the science of it; it is important to know that those who truly possess extra ordinary abilities; try to hide them from every one for a purpose. It is an ability unique to them.
I think movies like 'Matrix' etc brought more people to love the unknown and explore it.
For someone to do serious research in ESP, they would have to develop some new testing methods. What we have now is very inadequate.
People that "have" ESP need to be tested against control groups of those that don't have it. We need to know what to look for and how to record it and reproduce it.
I have the opinion that whatever brain wave is present in high ESP people is at some frequency we don't know about yet. It may be very subtle or so glaring that we have not seen it (can't see the forest for the trees effect).
I think it's a bit portentous that you used Dan Rather as an example! I went to the same college as Dan - Sam Houston State and he was always one of my personal heroes.
I have experienced an OBE myself during hypnosis. I was being treated for a phobia and had to learn self relaxation techniques. I can vividly recall that I floated outside of myself and watched the session from above. It was a very calming experience that felt natural at the time.

Qudsia, I think it's important to know about all truth, whether it has anything to do with one's own personal life or not. I mean, isn't that what life ultimately is? A search for truth?
Kat - brain mapping is when they do place the electrodes directly on the surface of the brain. It is important because the signals are much more clear. A nurse would have this patient 1:1 because usually they are using them to detect seizures. If the patient seizes - they would need to restrain them so the patient doesn't pull the electrodes out. I believe they only do this in severe cases.
An Extended EEG would be placing the electrodes directly on the scalp. The pasty gel is called 10/20 and it is used in the electrode cups to detect the electricity in the potentials. Without the gel - no signal. There are about 23 electrodes pasted onto the scalp with a measurement placement using pre-auricular points and what nots. It sucks to do it - but when we had to it took an hour for a registered tech to do it. We took great pride in doing it perfectly. (preparation for what we might see on the screen that night!) The down fall is that the signals have to be picked up through the scalp. The signals are only measured up to 40 Hz. In the brain mapping the signals can be measured up to 500Hz! So much better! It'd like looking at something through a foggy window compared to clean glass, ya know?
I don't believe seeking truth on any subject whether it has to do with your personal life or not is a waste of time. Ace Mo!:)
Hi Qudsia! - I do think there is a lot to be said for learning and understanding the unknown. I do think it can help in ways that can make the world a better place. If we just decided not to study anything scientifically - if we just give up - it is a sad state of affairs. We wouldn't be an industrialized nation if we didn't seek to progress - you know?
I think Matrix is a great example - but I think the interest goes back much further in time than that. I can think of research that dates back to the 1920's with regard to ESP for example. I do think people wouldn't openly boast about their abilities too - it is misunderstood and there lies the problem - getting to the truth of it so we can understand!

RH: You silly.. you're forgetting, that is what took so many things from my sisters brain. I was there for all the mapping outside and inside. When I said she flung the chords over her shoulder, they were already attached inside onto her brain. She was getting the surgery to make her stop having seizures because she was having like 20 petit mal seizures a day. She hasn't had any since, but that is how she lost her since of humor, better that than her speech, although I felt like taking that from her cos she became a bitch lol. But she was able to drive again. :)
We did have fun getting her to relearn things, she had humor then. I tested her for hours after she was healed enough to begin relearning. What kind of meat comes from a pig. She's say.. Austinstar! You again, are amazing! I think you are right on - I think there is a brain wave frequency that we do not understand yet. I think of it like a dog whistle - it's a sound you and I can't hear - the animal does. It exists. Just because we do not hear it doesn't mean it isn't there. I think it is why a person can't just summon up the power when they want. Why the episode would present at times unexpected to the recipient. I really do think you're right. I also have thought the answer could be staring us in the face but we don't see it!
I have a lot of test anxiety - I have learned relaxation techniques that are pretty effective. One of the things I do that bites me in the ass is look for harder answers. Sometimes I will not look for the easy answer because I expect it to be so much more tricky and complicated. So I will go through material twice and let the questions resonate a bit before answering - many times the answer was right there - it was so simple I over looked it.
I can't believe you went to college with Dan Rather! (scream)! Lucky you! You should write a hub about that - He was another trail blazer. And how could he not be a hero to anyone? He is still surrounded by mystery. So many people are all up in his stuff because he signed off the air with "courage" several times - and prior to his resignation so there's much to do about the reasoning behind it. That must have been super cool. I'd love to know more about that:)
I totally believe in OBE - there are so many accounts of it. I had a surgery once and all kinds of stuff was going on like that! It was so weird but I was aware it was weird at the time to so I just enjoyed it! I remember telling my doctor there were beautiful pills - bottles and bottles and all different colors all spilling together on my hospital tray:) also - I was floating everywhere - I swear I could even see the pills from above (and my own self in the bed) spilling and I was trying to catch them! Lol - the doc said I was hallucinating!
MO - if a girl had long hair and needed an Extended - I swear the registered techs on duty might be tempted to call in sick! And I would laugh because it was hilarious to see people fight over who had done the last one. We had to start keeping a log for proof:) lol!
The 10/20 electrode placement plan (lol) starts by measuring from pre-auricular to pre-auricular points - subtracting 5% on each side and dividing in half. This is a place on the side of your head almost even with the center of the ear. You can feel that small bone there. Then you would use your tape measure from inion to nasion - which is the spot on your forehead right between the eyebrows to the point at the base of scull, you can usually feel a little knot there. You divide that on half and the cross point of the two measurements basically is there first electrode bingo spot. You then use percentages of usually 20% to 10% increments. It's very tedious the first 500 times - after that it's a piece of cake:) lol
Kat - I thought I had confused you so I was trying to clear up whether I meant the outside or inside of the head. I knew you knew but thought I'd made it confusing for others:).
I bet that was a tough experience with lots of bittersweet moments. My step dad got cancer and it spread to his brain. It was hard to deal with at times - I swear it was in his mother center because he became a real mutha sometimes!

Sorry about your step dad :( Like her, I don't think they mean to be the way they are. Like the last we spoke she was confused to who is who in relation to our family. I've gotten a few emails saying she's been at my classmates page, so I know she can go on the computer, but she will not respond, so I think sometimes she remembers me, but other times not. But another relative keeps her confused too.
That is weird about you with your OBE and Dr. saying you were hallucinating. Had you been on your toes you could of said "well don't put lsd in my iv then" lol! When the balloon burst in my dad's heart they had him on so many meds he hallucinated. Out of the many things he said, we still never found the bags of money! ::sigh:: :) But we were very careful the snipers in the parking garage would not shoot the heads that were making faces at him in the glassed washroom. I'm telling you he escaped death more than all the Final Destination sequels than they could make!

The Major did not realize he was not being rational. I knew that - but it was hard to be around him. I would take him lunch every day - it got to where I would tell my mom I just wanted to throw the lunch through the door and run! It got so bad that my sister (who was in her upper teens) called me and I drove over in the middle of the night. She dropped all of his guns out her window and I sneaked up and took them home. He was becoming very threatening and said things that were scary. I was so freaked out - I kept imagining the police pulling me over with my stash of weapons! What would that have looked like? Omg!
He found out about it when he went to look for them and he kept asking me like he was a chi,d why I took his guns. It was terrible. Anyway - we made him forget about it and between the three of us we kept him in check usually.
I wish I could find some bags of money! Wouldn't that be the coolest?
Luckily my dad's dementia made him forget what a gun was, so I guess there's always some good in the bad. But my son took all the guns just in case he investigated what something was. I brought home the 22 he taught me to shoot with.
But speaking of guilt, it was hiding food from him. He would eat, and have his mouth full while accusing us of not giving him food. We'd say "WHAT ARE YOU CHEWING" lol, and food would be all over his face and he'd say "nothing where is the food"
But he was all together with his heart surgeries. Only the meds made him say stuff, and wow did he love hearing the stories after he got better. Back then we could joke.. there was money but it wasn't in bags it was in a lock box! And when he died, and I got it, it was GUESS WHAT... empty! lol
Anyway that disk like thing, freaked my neurologist out. He RAN (seriously ran) out of the room and got the Chief of staff of Henry Ford Hosp. in Detroit to look at it lol. I started crying LOL and he said it was different like, we all have different texture hair or skin. Good news was after all the tests I didn't have an aneurysm, but I do have "vascular enhancement" which means I'll get one someday. (they run in my family too lol) but that thing freak him out! I just never got to find out why mine is different from others.

And, I'm not kidding when I tell you we must have been on some parallel wavelength yesterday, because out of the blue during one of my many errands, I happened to think about the phrase "What's the frequency, Kenneth". See 1 there are funny stories with the bad ones too:) my grandfather would put food on his fork and it never failed, as he raid it to his lips it would fall off again. Terrible, but we would all end up giggling about it:)
My grandfather has a lock box full of silver coins - when I was a child I thought it was a treasure box! He saved all the silver dimes when the govt was collecting them. It is full and it is still in the family. I wrote my first real story about that box in 5th grade. My uncle said he's keeping it for me:) it has a lot of sentimental value.

I worked in Barnes ER for a while - I'll tell you - we admitted some schizophrenic people through there. Jeeze. This one tech was wheeling this sweet little old lady up to the 13th floor (psych ward) in the special elevator - she bit him! Viciously! Omg! She looked so sweet and fragile;)
He was abducted by aliens and they implanted something. It's so obvious when you know the answer.

I worked downtown on Locust Street and it was amazing how one day I'd have a lucid conversation with a homeless man and the next he'd be having his own loud, expletive engorged dissertation with himself as he walked past my window on the world!

Very interesting (voted awesome) having just finished a hub about the trigger for fibromyalgia and migraines being an electrical imbalance between the two hemispheres of the brain. This really gets interesting to me about brain waves. I've wondered about seizures I'd had as a teenager being related to developing my fibromyalgia, and then come to learn it is an electrical problem in the brain! all the meditation techniques that i have been exposed to have a system of slowing down brain acitvity which leads to the brain waves getting elongated eading to a tarcne like state.
the repetitive chanting in most groups,the breathing excercises in yoga called pranayam all lead towards the same state.
Hi Neeleshkulkarni - that is so interesting. I bet it does work well. Also, I think that merely slowing the breathing - would begin to slow the whole central nervous system down. It all has to do with the electrical currents that are carried through the body. Very cool!

Kel: I found in my dad's lock box just papers. I meant empty of bags of money.lol Now, I guess this is where it gets stranger. It had his Military papers. He had envelopes with 50's 100's saved, he had 20 grand in that box.
After I got to the point I could actually go in his stuff, I looked at the papers, and after a good cry, I seen an envelope, dreading opening it, fear of what I might see.. there was a stack of $2.00 bills. Um, that are pretty hard to find, like those dimes.
When my dad knew he was starting to lose his memory he started giving me stuff. He gave me all of his coins that he'd bought from the mint. So I didn't connect the two.. I think I was thinking "after" his death. but the coins he gave me were in a little plastic bag.. all silvers from his childhood. Silver dimes and quarters, Indian head nickles. "I" keep them all in a purse I used to carry that is.. a BOX. Those and his war monies are the only thing in there besides his tiny very old, magnifying glass he used to study maps with, and his pocket knife that is older than me. That's it. I'm thinking my son only knew to look where the real money was, so he over looked looking inside his Military papers. Which I have his dog tags too.
Now about this foil hat.. um, I can't mention names or they'll come up in a search. I know a musician, whose band split. One of the guys had very STRANGE idea's on keeping away evil. I didn't know much about him until a fake name came up on the message board I made for fans that said "for a good time call xxx=a phone #." I quickly took it down, but wrote the number in my "book of knowledge" lol I used to keep track of fans. Later I got into conversation with this girl whose phone number that was, she wrote me to say thanks for taking it down. They had dated but he was doing weird stuff like he felt SHE was evil (when one of the most lovable people I ever met) so he bought some root from a Pagan store that was to ward off evil spirits. She'd came in one day and he had lit the root and was waving it around. Because she was coming over and he wanted to clear the evil of her away. Um, I've never ever heard her say or do anything against anybody and she has a vast array of friends who love her to no end! He however has no friends. So whose the evil one.
Aside from that I think because our Grandpa's lived through so much, like the depression era and wars, and just hard times over all, made them know and keep what was going to be faded from our lives, it was a way of keeping some history alive for us so we'd know. I know how intrigued you must of been with that box, because I was intrigued with his "junk drawer" and used to stand at it long into my adult years and just look at all the trinkets he'd put in there over the years. (which disappeared after my mom's death)
I would love to read that paper you wrote as a child about that box of silver! To us as kids those things are magical.
Oh and don't let the metal man stop you guys! The metal man in this town is the richest man in the county and owns the only scrap metal place I know of! lol, we don't have returnable bottles here, so all scrap metal goes to him.
Mo, that saying greasing palms cracks me up every time I see or hear of it! There's an episode of the Munsters where they get to stay in a nice hotel and the bellboy is standing with his palm out. Grandpa asks why he's doing that, and Lily says "he's waiting to have his palm greased" and Grandpa points to it and a glop of grease appears! lol.
Kat - sounds like your family is so much like mine! Yes - gramps kept any silver dines, quarters, half dollars and dollar pieces he could get his hands on. He checked every penny to see the year before it was spent.
In the fifth grade - my teacher said we were going to write our own stories! The only rule was - you had to use this sentence in your story - "so I put in the key, and turned the lock....." LOL! I don't remember most of it - but I got an A+ and a new love:). I do know the story was about me finding the "treasure" box of my grandfathers coins;) it really was magical:)

Oh how cute!!! In my creative writing they would do that to us! Once we had to write a "mystery" ooooooh! Fun! Cos I love a good mystery! I'll never forget I was so happy about it and had a great plot, but the ONLY reason I didn't get an A was because I put "They heard foot prints outside the window" LOL I got the paper back with a big red circle that said "WE SEE FOOT PRINTS NOT HEAR THEM" HAHAA.. I'l just never forget that story and that!
You might be too young to remember this, but there used to be a kids version of mystery stories called Encyclopedia Brown?? I LOVED those stories! I think I read them all until the books literally fell apart! But I LEARNED A LOT from them! I seriously think that's why I can peg a "who dun it" in movies nowdays! MOST of the time, they've gotten trickier! But the whole putting on a larger pair of shoes than your own, is great in stories for not being caught with your own "foot PRINT" lol!
Granddad's and even dad's have a way of just being magical!
My dad also did that with money, and when I worked at (blah) K-mart, he'd always have me look through the change at my registers and replace all silvers with my own, and luckily they let us do it! :) I hated working there tho! Glad it was a short term! :)

Kelly, the brain is very complicated. I can see how messy with it screwed up Kats sister's memory. I guess it may have saved her life beings she is not having seizures anymore.

Hi Tina - well I think it's almost like a kind of hallucination that you are watching - I think it's as if you can see your own self but the thoughts are in the mind of the floater? Like the body you see is sleeping? Good question but I'm not sure I have a good answer!
I have seen some interesting cases - I also had a patient once who had a pseudo seizure - in other words she faked it!! I could tell because her brain waves were completely normal for one thing (regular alpha that means you're awake:) I just couldn't be surprised by anything! Lol
Hi gr8! Yeah, well, she wasn't ever the brightest candle on the Menorah, but yeah it did take her seizures, but she was never the same, I haven't seen her in years, don't plan on it either. Life ya know.
Oh the sleep paralysis thing is HORRIBLE to say the least. I hate when it's happened to me. You are really TRYING to scream or get someone to wake you but you can't get a sound out. It also happened to my friend the other week. I think it's more common. He has sleep apnea and fell asleep in the chair, and I could tell he was trying to say something and I had to literally scream his name like 5 times, and just as I was getting ready to go shake him so he'd wake up, he woke, and said "I'M SO GLAD YOU WOKE ME, I COULDN'T MAKE MYSELF COME OUT OF THIS DREAM" then went on to tell me he was dreaming he was trapped under something and couldn't get out. I didn't even know he'd drifted off! But it's an awful feeling!
RH: that is weird someone would think they can fake the machine like that! duh! lol I'm surprised her brain waves were normal LOL j/k ha, but what do you think this is. My dr said unless I had seizures all the time there'd be no way to tell what this is. But I was walking up the stairs and I got SUPER dizzy/faint feeling, and I never lost consciousness, but I lost all muscle control and couldn't stand up. Luckily I'd just opened the door to come in, and I was holding a toaster lol, and since it was new, all I could think was "don't drop it" so I clutched onto it, but I was going down! I remember everything, and still have the note I wrote cos I didn't know if I was dying/stroke/seizure or what! But nothing fell out of my arms, I just couldn't stay standing up! It lasted about 5 minutes then went away as quick as it came on! Never happened before that, nor since. My dr said if it was a stroke I'd have other symptoms I didn't have, and so he said there's no way to tell, even an MRI wouldn't show anything because it was about 2 more months before I could come home to the dr. After it went away though I was fine, just kinda freaked that it happened. Glad I didn't crap my pants LOL. Any idea's??
Hi Kat - yeah you can't fake the machine out - it for sure picks up seizure spikes and a different looking brain activity. I'm not usre what went on with your short term - I suppose it sounds like a paralysis - right? Gosh it sounds like a neuro rather than a dietary thing....?

The evidence for ESP is pretty flimsy. Your article uses a lot of technical language to make ESP sound like it is a legitimate phenomenon. REM is initiated in the pons and other areas of the brainstem while we sleep. There is nothing supernatural about dreaming. The neuroscientist Wilfred Penfield, among others, demonstrated that feelings of deja vu and out of body experience can be evoked by stimulating parts of the temporal lobe. Aside from that, the idea of ESP defies our knowledge of physics. Proponents of ESP not only need to demonstrate that it exists but they would need to come up with an entirely new way of explaining physics. So far, this just hasn't happened.

In the 80's my sister had surgery to make seizures stop. They mapped her brain with the electrodes, and I watched them make all the changes to the machine to make sure it didn't damage her speech center because it's so close. Well, she doesn't remember me being there, and now she doesn't have seizures either. She also doesn't remember that my kid was my kid she thinks it's my dad's kid but not her brother. She also has no humor. Like if you told her a joke you'd have to say "this is a joke" then she'd smile like "oh ok that would be funny if I understood it.' So she is totally damaged from that.
If you ever get a chance watch Strange Days with Juliet Lewis, (not with your kids maybe) but it's a futuristic movie that people record what they are doing and sell the recording. So it gets into crimes. They're higher dollar. A person commits a crime, then it goes to market because they cannot be seen unless they were by a mirror which they are not. They end up playing mind games with each other, and over a murder, it's something I think you'd be interested in. It's like this in a way. Without the goop they put in your hair that's forever to get out :) Great hub!
