What's Hot and What's Not - Top 5 Finger Discount Items
83Grade A Red Meat
One in every eleven people is a thief. The economy is bad and if it isn't obvious by the decrease in annual Christmas parties this year then it is made more glaring by the items that people are stealing this year. Grade A Meat is on the rise - up approximately 21% this year. Alcohol is second on the list of items most ripped off during the holidays.
There may be no honor among thieves but apparently they have the same taste in designer brands. According to ABC, Polo Ralph Lauren Clothing is the hottest item stolen as well as Chanel No 5 perfume, Gillette Razors and Nike Shoes. Let's Rock Elmo needs a new warning on it's label - apparently it might burn the baby because it is one HOT item this year.
The trend at college campuses is just what you would expect. Cell phones, jewelry, bikes, books, cash, credit/debit cards, laptops and ipods. Documents and materials from computers has risen over the last 5 years.
Bait Car reports stereo equipment, CD's, laptops, coins, GPS systems and vehicle registration papers as the most commonly stolen items from vehicles.
Hotwheels in America? 1995 Honda Civic is the preferred brand among stolen cars. Cadillac Escalades, Honda Accord and Camry also top the list. Canadian criminals like the 2009 Toyata Venza - a nice four door family vehicle.
The price of cheese is criminal. 4% of the world's cheese is stolen each year. Apparently it is lifted in large quantities and sold in the marketplace.
Hotels take a $100 million dollar hit due to theft each year. The most common things people take are the towels. Figure me a riddle and tell me why sheets and bedding are on that list? Who likes hotel sheets so much they want to take them home and put them on their bed? Bed bugs were a huge problem in hotels last year. Take one sheet and you might be taking 100 friends home with you.
Shoplifting and thinking ahead.....
Shoplifting is illegal and the penalties and consequences are contingent upon variables such as the state where the crime occurred, the dollar value of the item, if the person quietly pocketed the item or used a weapon in the course of the crime.
Most people do not think they will get caught or the risk is worth the reward. However, if you steal a Let's Rock Elmo and get busted - you are going to have to keep a straight face for the mug shot. The person in the cell with you could be a murderer and you are going to have to explain how you got caught swiping a stuffed Sesame Street Character. Take my advice - say you stole a 1995 Civic.

Tips to prevent theft:
- keep purses, book bags or carriers in sight and closed at all times
- keep car doors locked and windows up and do not leave valuables in car ( approximately 20% of vehicles are stolen because the keys are left in the car)
- have a home security system installed
- park in an area that is near lights if possible
- do not use a hide a key - thieves look for those - the gig is up!
- keep a record of serial numbers of all electronics
- video tape everything in your home with serial numbers included
- keep your receipts
- have a neighbor watch your home if you are gone
- most residential theft takes place in the daytime hours (use security decals, alarm warnings, bars on the doors, dogs or a good neighbor to discourage this)
- again - do not use a hide a key or leave a key under the doormat - robbers know about them and they look for those....don't advertise your vulnerability
- when on vacation - stop your mail and newspaper delivery
- use a timed light device - these are often very affordable and a great deterrent
- If you notice any unusual vehicles sitting near your home try to jot a license plate number down - if there is no license plate on the vehicle and someone is sitting and watching the neighborhood - report it to the police immediately
- never post a message on Facebook or social networking site announcing you are going on vacation

OMG Dave and I were just talking about druggies stealing steaks to trade for drugs!! He's a butcher and takes pride in his cuts of meat...when they get stolen he gets irate! They don't just stop at beef either! Baby formula also which is why the grocery stores need to keep it behind the counters. Over the counter drugs are also stolen! Do you think my husband works for a grocery chain!?
Cars get broken into often around my neck of the woods also! Most of the time the owners didn't lock the doors...hello!? why not just leave your goods on the hood of your car!
Excellent hub Real! Voted UP/Awesome!! Thieves really irk me, get a job!
Very helpful tips Kelly. I think a lot people will find this extremely beneficial and somewhat funny to top it. LOL! Voted up! :)
brilliant article and very informative. this was an obvious lenthy reserch prtoject. Thank you.
Wow! Voted up and awesome.
My house was broekn into June 18 and robbed and the RCMP let the people go and this fellow has a history with poice December 2010. he destroyed a building and threatend everyone , held the SWAT team off for 13 hours , they had to chaisaw the wall to get him out. a repeat offender
Excellent hub! I wish I had thought of it. Thanks for the links and congrats on becoming Elite!
Wow RealHousewife , this was absolutely marvelous. You go girlfriend!
I like your straight forward approach and how you tell it like it is. I'm not for sure how much those Elmo things are but I think they're pretty high. People just should not steal should they?
It's a terrible thing to do and shows very bad character. I am making myself laugh right now, but I don't care. It's the truth. Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Well, I don't know. That meat looks really enticing and who doesn't want some high dollar meat in their pants?
I love the bait car! It's an awesome idea for cops to do... I wish everyone who stole things got caught.
Wow! Some of those things, yes, how on earth would you get them out of the store unnoticed? I guess busy shopping times must play into the equation.
As far as hide-a-key gizmos go, I've always thought it would be hilarious to actually have one, but when the would-be thief finds and opens it, instead of a key, he finds a slip of paper reading, "PSYCH! Gotcha, sucker!" If would be even better if I had the tech skills to wire it so that upon opening it triggered a flash, and made him think he (or she) had been photographed!
Good advice all around, though. I had a purse stolen one year, and it was a royal PITA to cancel and replace everything. I no longer carry a purse--I used a belt pouch that is strapped around my waist, and there it stays--in front of me. On the rare occasions when I do take it off in the grocery store, I use the child-seat strap to tie it to the shopping cart, as well as its own belt as an additional tie-in. One set goes across the top, making the zipper hard to get to.
The thing about thieves is this--very few are hardened criminals. Most are just opportunists, and they will look for the easiest target. Throw in a difficulty or two, and they'll seach elsewhere.
Voted up, interesting and useful.
Are you a housewife-cum-spook?
Awesome
You have found a way to to even bring fun into keeping safe. Only you could do this Kelly. Well done!
This brought back so many memories!! I am lucky enough to not have anything stolen from me, but I try to be smart about it so that it wouldn't happen. Still working with customers at a grocery store, at wal-mart and now at ToysRus I see sooooooooooo much theft!! It boggles my mind. 1 time we had a guy run out of the store with almost $200.00 worth of food... he didn't make it far! Still at wal-mart was probably the craziest... we had people who would steel like 5 of the exact same thing. We figured they were probably selling them to make money. It is all crazy. I hate thieves with a passion though... sometimes I feel sorry for them as well, but it doesn't matter what is going on in your life... we have enough help in our communities to help feed people if they need to be fed and theft just should never be an option. Oh well... I also am partly responsible for the inventory of stolen goods at ToysRus... so now I'm off to see what other things we can find that has been stolen lately :-) Great hub though!! Just brought back a lot of memories!
Kelly - you mentioned wondering what product mark-up is because of stolen goods. You might be interested to know that shoplifting in large department stores accounts for about 27% of retail theft while inventory shrinkage (retail term for employee theft) accounts for 48%. Lesson there: don't just watch the customers. Watch your employees.
Very interesting, informative hub - voted up.
haha... you just made me remember another event. We had a lady who stole a thing of cupcakes... she shoved them down her shirt! Somebody saw her do it though so when we asked if she had decided not to get the cupcakes she got flustered and put them back... but we had to throw them out because they were all mushed up and a mess. I just don't understand people. The worst part is she tried to steal the cupcakes but bought steak and shrimp and a bunch of other expensive food with her food stamps card... she even had enough money for the cupcakes on her card. I don't get it!!! lol
This is an interesting hub. I had no idea meat got stolen so often, or Elmos.
A friend just told me that in the UK people are stealing copper wiring off rail tracks and so the trains can’t go. Apparently there may be new regulations brought in to control what scrap metal merchants can buy and sell because it’s so rife.
We’ve had 2 cars stolen over the years, both were locked. Both were stolen by kids who trashed them within hours, and one was stolen from a school’s grounds.
OH goodness that is too funny... and see this just keeps reminding me of more and more things!! lol... although the remote found in the folds of her flesh reminds me of Austin Powers!!! So gross of an image!! I like the idea of shiny though :-) I can't ever imagine eating a fork to steal it though... I know lots of people who would drink a bottle of beer in our liquor department and then leave though! lol.. They were getting desperate :-)
You offer some very good suggestions on how to protect home, property and person. And, I had no idea you could track stolen stuffs online! I'm not sure if this is more cool or scary. It's so sad that in the season of giving we have to be aware of such but it's a sure sign of the times. Merry Christmas anyway!
Wow Real HouseWife.. these numbers are scary. I don't know how people can steal such large items.. but they do. It is no wonder why the prices of groceries and etc.. are so high. There is so much money in security, security tags and packaging. If people were more honest prices might go down. Great hub!
Great hub, Kelly. I have never understood burglary and it makes me very angry. I don't have a sense of entitlement. i don't think I have the right to steal what someone else worked for. I understand the need to steal to survive, but most people don't.
Thanks for writing this funny and informative hub. Merry Christmas!
An interesting hub . . . and all the comments. For some, I think stealing is a dare/high . . . can I get away with it. For others a way to survive. Sad for both. Honesty is truly the best policy!
Then if you stole food to eat and got caught, they would put you in jail and feed you! Well, not high quality meat, but at least it's three squares.
I'm not recommending it for sure. But some people do actually commit crimes with the intent of going to prison. They like the structure and they don't have to work.
Very creative hub idea Kel! I love the part about "taking bed bugs home." I worked in a couple hotels for awhile and it was amazing what people took. Towels did top the list and then throw blankets. Some people actually took the coffee pot. Great hub!

This was so 'fun' to read. I say it like that because theft is never really fun :) But the cars you listed as the top hot wheels in America and Canada? If I was going to spend time in prison for stealing a car I would pick something FAST to have the time of my life before I was caught! Thanks for a fun read. I mean a 'fun' read.
stealing is a mind set and comes, I think, from a sense of entitlement. I don't get it, but at the same time, i probably have vices that others don't understand.
It's weird. I would be more mad if someone stole from me then if someone killed me.
ya, it's weird, but it's true. I'd rather be murdered then robbed
Kelly, I can't imagine how scary that would be.I'm glad you survived and I'm glad you had such an intuitive and smart little girl to help you out :-)
informative hub, kelly.
However these days Tide detergent is also a well known item to be taken away without notice from the stores. Blame it on their bar code. We, humans are very smart creatures and know which items are coded etc...lol
I like your list of to do things when going on a vacation etc.
voted up indeed!
THERE ARE MANY FORMS OF THEFT AND WHITE COLLAR IS COMMON THESE DAYS. HERE IS A TRUE ACCOUNT. A WOMAN WHO RUNS HOMES FOR DISABLED AND SENIORS , HIRES HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO WORK FOR HER. THEY STEAL FROM THE CLIENTS THAT RENT FROM THEM. FORCE THEM TO WORK FOR NO MONEY UNDER THREATAS THEY DEVELOPEMNTALLY CHALLENGED AND DISABLED FEAR HER AND HER STAFF.THEN THE PEOPLE ARE ROTATED FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE FOR A CHARGE MAYBE 400 EACH WHICH SHE POCKETS. WHEN THEY DO MOVE THEY NEVER GET THEIR MONEY BACK FOR CLEAN UP. THIS WOMAN DOUBLE BILLS THE SYSTEM. SHE BILLS THE SYSTEM FOR SERVICE FOR THEM AND ALSO BILLS THE CLIENT. SHE MAKES OVER 10,000 A MONTH OR MORE DOING THIS AND DOES NOT PAY TAXES ON IT, THEN WITH THE MONEY SHE KEEPS FROM NON PAYMENT THAT WOULD BE ANOTHER 10,000 A YEAR OR MORE. BEYONED THEFT IT IS ALSO TAX EVASION.
One of every eleven people is a thief??? I hope that statistic is wrong. My son, at about seven, took a candy bar from the grocery store. I brought him back to the store to return it. If that sort of thing is counted in the stats, I can see them being high. Yet that son, as an adult, would not steal. Anyway, as for the hot items - stealing things to give as presents!?
As young couples, my group used to debate stealing a bottle of milk for hungry children. Who would, who wouldn't? I said I'd beg for the money for milk rather than steal it. (This was considering there was no work.)
Good hub. I like the way you write.

Wow - you have stolen the show with this topic! :) I guess when it comes to theft, people always think it is never going to happen to them. When we lived in Wisconsin we had 2 vehicles... a big van and a little ford Escort ZX2. The next day we realized that we had been ripped off. Eli had left his work laptop in the van. But it was locked and he must have been tired. The bag looked like nothing more than a duffle bag so it didn't scream laptop. My car however had 20 dollars sitting in the cup holder, my Ipod and a bunch of trash... unlocked for anybody to access. Dumb thieves - stole from the vehicle that was locked. They could have made life much more easier by going for my Ipod. Luckily thought, while the computer disappeared, his Ipod fell out of one of the pockets and landed in the driveway. We found it weeks later as the snow started melting. It even still works. What a hassle.
Great hub - Glad I don't have 95 Honda Civic! :)
