The videos and photos are all things Lela Cargill!
I can't tell you how many times I have read a book only to get to the end and I didn't understand something. Books don't talk back no matter how many questions you ask. That is one of the coolest things about Hub - you can ask the author questions or tell them how much you enjoyed their work!
There is a person behind the Avatar! I don't care if you think you are talking to a dog, frog or Brad Pitt - there is a real person writing those hubs and exchanging commentary. Being inquisitive, as I am, I decided to ask fellow hubber, Austinstar, if she would let me interview her so we can all get a peek inside of her life. You can tell by her hubs and the comments she writes that she is creative, sassy and knows lots of stuff!
If you haven't had to opportunity to see her work - wait until you have finished reading this hub and then you can go read her stuff! Austinstar has an eclectic collection of 120 hubs. That alone is pretty impressive but she is a real mixed bag of treats. An artist, photographer, writer and get this - she works in Immunohematology.
What's your name?
Pleased to meet you! Hope you can guess it.
(I warned you that she's got a little sass goin' on with her bad self.....) Her name is Lela Cargill.
I know that you live on a ranch in Austin, Texas but who do you live with and what is on your ranch? Animals or crops?
Every Texan lives on a ranch. It's what we do. I live with my husband, Bob, of 20 years. He's a yankee, but I don't hold that against him. I have 2.3 acres of land, a creek, dogs, cats, squirrels, raccoons, snakes, rats, spiders, scorpions and a few other critters.
p.s. - ranches are for animals, farms are for crops!
Where were you born? I know that you are Choctaw Indian but what is your Indian name?
I was born in TexIas, of course! My Choctaw name is Shikoba Humma (Red Feather).
What age were you when you discovered that you had so much artistic talent? Did you draw a lot as a child?
I was creative for as long as I can remember. I did not draw a lot as a child but I did practice looking at things very closely. I was myopic.
Did artistry come naturally for you or did you take classes to learn to draw?
I took a few classes to learn to draw and a few for photograpy. Then it was practice, practice, practice!
To see more art by Austinstar visit lelacargill.com
Oh yeah! The design on shirt I am wearing in the avatar was created by yours truly also!
How long have you been writing and do you write for any other internet web sites?
I've been writing since I was old enough to draw letters and string them together. I have always wanted to be a writer. It is amazing to me to be able to communicate by words. I do write on a few other sites, but I have focused on HubPages because of the freedom they give me to say pretty much whatever I want. Copy editors are a necessary evil, but I don't like them. I like the guidance on HP but they aren't so rigid.
Can you sum up your work history for us? What kind of jobs have you held?
At the age of 12, I left my dysfunctional family and struck out on my own. I was a waitress, a laborer at a farmer's market and a very young wife. After I finished growing up, at 22, I stuck out on my own again and worked at various odd jobs to put myself through school to be a Medical Laboratory Technician (lab tech). I graduated in 1974 and went into that profession. After a few years, I began to specialize in the Blood Bank Department (Immunohematology). I've been doing that for over 30 years now. It's a very narrow field and still in demand. I think mostly because people don't know so much about it. Working with blood seems rather complicated and sordid in some ways.
Did you enjoy school? What kind of student would you say that you were?
I enjoyed school, especially the English classes. I learned to read when I was 5 years old and became a voracious reader. I still read a lot. I was an honor student and always made A's (except in conduct - now who would have guessed?). I used to read the dictionary for fun! I dropped out of school in the 7th grade and didn't return until after my divorce from my first husband.
Was there an artist that inspired you in particular to become an artist?
My favorite artist by far is Georgia O'Keefe. I also love Frederic Remington and Leonardo DaVinci. There are tons of photographers that I love too, like Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Annie Liebowitz and many others.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include making dream catchers, writing and photography.
What kind of camera do you use? Do you develop your own film?
I have developed my own film and even X-rays in the past. Now I go totally digital. I have a simple Kodak digital camera and I transfer al photos to Paint Shop as soon as possible.
I know that you lived in Mexico in the past and were a "Curandera." How did this come about? Do you speak Spanish?
I learned to speak Spanish and very nearly moved to that country. Mexican's are obsessed with their health and are always seeking this or that potion for what ails them. Medication and supplies are readily available in Las pharmacias in Mexico. No prescriptions needed. I knew a lot about infectious agents and parasites and was able to provide "cures" to obvious ailments. Then it got out of hand. American tourists were also asking me to get this drug or that drug for them and when the AIDS scare was in full bloom, thousands of people went to Mexico for "treatment". It didn't work.
After you left Mexico where did you go?
I moved to Hawaii in 1990 to take a short vacation before moving to Mexico and starting a new life there. I ended up meeting my soul mate in Hawaii and gave up all my plans to move to Mexico. We lived on the island of Maui and sometimes I miss it so much I could just cry. It's a beautiful place. Maybe the most beautiful on Earth. Not being as rich as Bill Gates or Stephen Speilberg, we had to give it up and choose a place on the mainland to move to. I was partial to Texas and Bob is a musician, so Austin was a natural place for us.
What is your idea of the perfect evening?
Ha! Can I spend time with Dwayne Johnson (The Rock)? Or talking to Einstein or reading the new Jack Reacher book? A perfect evening would be sitting on the beach, doing nothing at all.
If Drbj could resurrect anyone for one of her famous interviews, who would you like her to interview?
Einstein, of course. Or maybe the real Jesus.
What is your bank account number?
8675309. What's yours?
Now, let me ask you again folks, who is the brightest star in Texas?
Here's your night with Dwayne!

I have actually thought of emailing you as I really do like you a whole bunch!!!
Austinstar writes stuff I love so far but have only read a few of her hubs many more to yet read.
I'm still busy drooling over Dwayne to answer. More later.
RH Us Libra's are true perfectionists lol
First perfectionist correction - It's Shikoba Humma, not Shinkoba Humma. (I should have been a copy editor). That could have been my mistake though when I first typed it in the interview.
Well, I have to say this is the best Interview I've ever had! I'm surprised you didn't ask for a baby picture :-)
I think RealHousewife is going to be one of the most popular hubbers ever. She's smart, sweet and kick-ass! Follow her now guys and gals! She's going to be a super nova!
As soon as I got your email I knew I had to check this out. That is awesome and very informative. You are a good stalker... lol... ;) You have put together a really nice piece here! Voted up just because you are too dang cool!
Just go to drbj's profile, then copy the URL (Control+C), then add a link just like you did with my link. You can paste what you copied by hitting Control+V
I remember the keyboard shortcuts for Copy because I say in my head - Control + C for Copy.
But for paste, I have no idea why it's Control + V (very nice paste?)
Fish Tacos??? EWWWW sorry just had to comment on that lol
Fish tacos! YUMMMMM You should try one Susan! They're great. Better than a fish sandwich.
The first time I heard The High Road by Broken Bells, I had to have it. It's pretty awesome. I used to have many Striesand albums and I still have ALL of Billy Joel's stuff. I even have an 8 Track (Country Boy). It's never been opened.
My keyboard has been cleaned of the drool, so I can type again, but I don't dare watch Dwayne's video again until Bob isn't around! Who is that man's dentist? He's got the best smile in the whole world.
RH - This was a GREAT interview and Lela was a GREAT subject. Put you both together and you create 'hubbalicious' Hub history.
Lela - I have Dwayne, the Rock's autograph. I met him in a restaurant when he was a well-known wrestler but not yet a movie star and convinced my dining companion to ask him for the autograph. He was sweet as pie and handsome as could be. You have superb taste.
RH - Thank you for the link; I will put Lela's request concerning Einstein under advisement. Thanks for the fun hub and THANKS for the photos of our hero!
Great job, what a well crafted and informative hub. Looks like you both had a lot of fun with this project. I especially liked the P.S. explaining the difference between ranches and farms.
Ummm, I think we have a new stalker.
I was being a bit facetious. There is such a thing as farm animals and hybrid farm/ranches.
Oh, I do hope drbj does Einstein. I've been a fan of hers(his?) for like ever!
You all are great - RealHWife, Austinstar, Susan, barbergirl, drbj! What a fun hub! You are all so interesting and talented! Hint for great fish tacos -- called Margarita fish. Marinate them in everything you would put in a margarita - tequila, salt, lime . . . delicious!
Hmmm, TS may make better fish tacos than you do K! I'll bet shrimp ceviche would be good as a fish taco too! Oh heck, now I want one.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.... I am trying to figure out what you learned from the booty pop! LOL I learned it makes your booty pop but makes you feel like your wearing depends... on your rear end... lol
This is an excellent interview and brings out so much more about AustinStar. Knowing these little extra things about someone discreates the stuff we imagine about them and it makes them more REAL. Your name says it all. It was you who introduced me to AustinStar among many other hubbers and it is your generous nature to share that touches everyone you communicate with. You have a talent for brightening up everyone's day and just look at the hive of activity around every single one of your hubs to see what I mean. Your energy is amazing and if you put your mind to it you could be your own Google someday! I agree with AustinStar when she says you are going to be the most popular hubber ever and you deserve all the praise that you get. Voted up up and awesome.
Hey, I thought you were in school this morning! Aren't you supposed to dress up as a candygram? Do you deliver in Texas?
I still see the SNL skit about the shark, lol!
What fun to read! I knew about Austinstar's wit, photography and job...but learned even more from this lighthearted hub. Thanks!
Okay I am back again. Have been contemplating the fish taco's and after reading TS Margarita Fish Taco's I am convinced I have to try them now. Okay off to the liquor store I go :) Oh and I Just finished listening to Broken Bells - The High Road. Thanks for introducing me a new band (to me) awesome!
Very interesting Hub. You are good interviewer and Austinstar is a good subject. Well done!
Hey Peggy, I haven't forgotten the photography contest! I'm being very lazy about finishing it. But I'm getting there.
Broken Bells sang here at the last SXSW festival in Austin. They are really good. Then I saw them on Letterman or Leno one or the other. So they are very up and coming. The Ghost in the Machine is another one of their songs that is going places.
Hello James, thanks for the compliment. I hear you are doing quite well on hubpages! Congratulations on year two!
RHW: Very unique hub...I will check out Austinstar...its always fun to learn about hubbers. Voted UP!!!
RHW - A Frog? You mean to tell me frogs write Hubs? Oh my...
And BTW! The brightest star in Texas will be my son on May 12th when he walks across the stage to receive his degree in geology from UT!
Excellent Hub. It got me thinking on my lily pad.
The Frog
8675309---Ricky don't change your number....
This was a great hub. I have always considered Austin an interesting specimen.. and even more so now. You dissected her well, Realho... you should be proud!
Realho... I just don't know how you do it. You find time to help at the school, work, write and stalk quite a few hubbers. You're an excellent stalker, by the way. My hat is off to you... and I agree with Austin, you're going to be one of the more popular hubbers...you're a ton of fun, and as nice as you are pretty. :O)
Very cool.
Austinstar, it's official...you're now a celebrity! Only celebrities get interviews...:)
RealHousewife, I've been an Austin fan for a while now, so thanks for this further insight into what makes our terrific Texan Tick. I can't believe she left home at 12! Sheesh I could barely tie my own shoelaces at that age. *Impressed*
I wish I could have had mothers or sisters like you guys! It took me years to straighten out my teen years. Talk about wild and crazy. I did a lot of stupid things, but the smartest one was leaving home. I would have died if I had stayed there. I sympathize with every runaway and I was very fortunate to meet the right people who helped me along. I got my driver's license at 14 and I still have the same number! I had a car before that and became the first of the homeless people to live in a car! I'm such a trailblazer. I think I was the one that started the one earring craze in the late 60's early 70's. I was a hippie when it was cool. Strangely enough I never did drugs. I worried about them destroying my mind and my mind was really all I had in the world.
Wow girls! It took me longer to read the great comments than it did to read the cool interview. BUT all was very entertaining.
Austinstar is a great writer and one that I have been following (not stalking) for a while and have much respect for . . . I really loved learning new stuff about you Star.
And Kel, well, you are just a trip. You ALWAYS make me laugh. I've come to expect and respect sincere openness (and silliness) from you which I appreciate and look forward to always.
Great Job!!!
Sharyn
Who is the Brightest Star in Texas? Rick Perry. :)
Stu from VT - Let me guess, you also voted for G.W.
Did anyone see the movie with Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds - The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas?
Well, it kind of sums up what Texans think about politics. Pay special attention to the "Governor" played by scene stealer, Charles Durning.
It's one of the funniest movies ever made that also makes you cry.
Austinstar,
Actually, GWB was a centrist, and not a very good president. He overspent, got the notoriously illegal Patriot Act passed, and invaded Iraq based on fake evidence of nuclear research just to pump his poll numbers up for 2004 (he was trailing Kerry badly in the polls because he overpromised regarding what we would accomplish in the Afghanistan reprisal).
Bachmann in 2012!!!
Stu and Sheepie
RealHousewife,
As I said to Austinstar, GWB was a centrist, and not a very good president.
But what's wrong with Rick Perry? He fought against creating a TX income tax, he's anti-abortion, anti homosexual marriage, pro-Israel, in favor of teaching children intelligent design, vetoed more liberal legislation than any governor in the country, made numerous conservative appointments to the Texas courts, is very tough on crime, supports both legacy and green energy production, is an unwavering supporter of states' rights under the Tenth Amendment, and wants to enact a law similar to AZ's SB 1070 to eject illegal aliens.
Stu and Sheepie (political advisor)
I feel like I stumbled into the Austinstar Girl's Fan Club Forum. You guys go back and forth faster than I can think. I celebrate anyone from Texas and Lela you make us proud. Thanks RH for a fun interview. =:)
I'm still contemplating the pole dancing T's. And Rick Perry is as phony and bought as they get. But I do agree with about half of what he "stands" for.
Everyone needs a fan club! Thank you, RealHo!
Two things - Austin, you're AWESOME!!!!! Real, I can't believe - I honestly thought I was already following Lela, but apparently, I wasn't. Thanks for straightening that out for me!
Ladies, this place is full of some of the most awesome folks in the world, and you are definitely TWO of them. I'm gonna jump on the interview bandwagon soon - expect calls, emails, whatever.
Much love to you both. :-)
Hey Mo. I thought you were following me too! Well, I was following you at least. I just checked. I have a tiny touch of Alzheimer's brain, but you are too cool not to follow!
Real, this was fantastic. I went to her site. I love her art work.
My mom is Blackfeet and I love anything Native American. I also love her native name it is beautiful
Thank you for the peek into Austinstar's world
Tina
Real, I'm so glad you didn't say I have a killer sense of grammar and was pretty good with the humor. :P You two are by far two of my brightest stars!
Whoa! It's only taken me 36 years, but I finally have a stalker! Woo hoo! I'm cool now, you know!?!? :P
A stalker a day keeps the dull people away.
Dull people love me. They get bored outshining me. :P
Sorry, folks....that Caramus comment was actually from me. I didn't realize I was logged in under his account. That snazzy looking dude in the pic with the cool cat is my husband.
What a fun and interesting interview. Very well done! You both make a good team. Rated up and awesome. :)
Nice interview....as well as interesting comments...not sure which I enjoyed more....so I will vote both way up
drbj gets to interview dead people, RealH gets to interview living people! It's all good again...
The "Star" is a sassy one and those cool dark sunglasses she wears makes me think that she does a pretty good Stevie Wonder impersonation...dang that ESP anyway! LOL! Thanks for the fun RH! WB
You can't see me! Mwhaahahaha.
The Hollies - Long Cool Woman! I was a groupie!
It's not raining here. So dry I can't even spit.
California Dreamin' is one of my faves...not raining here yet, but sure looks and feels like it's going to. :-)
Thanks, Real. I'll be sure to send it back when I'm done. :P Of course, since Austin probably needs it more, I'll send it down to her. :)
RealHousewife,
OK, I stand corrected.
Austinstar is the brightest star in Texas.
Rick Perry is number two.
Stu
Winsome,
Wish I lived in Texas. They'd like me there alot more than in the People's Republik of Vermont!
Stu
Austinstar,
Can you give me some examples of where Perry's actions have differed from his stated policies? Exactly who is he caving in to?
Thanks, Stu
RealHousewife,
I noticed you voiced no comment about "RealHo." I probably would have offered constructive advice. :)
Stu
RealHousewife,
Now I'm getting jealous. Nobody is stalking me. :(
Stu
What a really cool hub. Nicely done. Hope you had a nice Mother's Day!
Thanks RealHousewife, we had a nice Mother's Day too. We went to the beach at Galveston, Tx. and had a nice seafood dinner.
Stu - Rick Perry does seem to take care of Texas for the most part. He's in bed with oil and rail, but maybe we need that. He is certainly more Texan than G.W. Goober anyway.
My sister has the same problem with her phone I.D. It says "Vernaho" which is her home number. I still think it's funny. And then there's always "Idaho".
Austinstar,
I assume you mean Perry takes money from oil and rail, and then supports legislation that helps them. Do you know what kind of help he typically provides (tax loopholes, earmarks, etc.)?
Thanks, Stu
Stu, darling, I'm not a politician and couldn't answer those questions. I hear Perry is open to communication, so please contact him directly. Personally, I don't think Perry is any better or worse than any other politician. Being a governor is the farthest job title I would ever aspire to.
Now, if you want me to photograph him naked (boudoir style) . That would be more up my alley.
Perry is reasonable handsome. But too old for my cougar tastes.
Be nice to Dave day - have him pose on fresh sheets and pillows with a rose between his teeth and get out your easel. Draw whatever you feel.
I think I'm going to make that suggestion to Michael. That's funny as he!!, Austin!
Hi Austinstar,
I wasn't surprised by your comments about Perry. I've heard some others say he is a little slippery as an operator, even though he has a fantastic policy platform. I need to do more research on him.
Stu
RealHousewife,
Thanks for investigating; I'll look forward to your results.
And you gals say men always think with what's between their legs. Maybe there's some contributory negligence here?
Stoo
Austinstar,
You and RH are helping us men shed our neanderthal image. Thanks!!!
Austinstar,
I don't think being a porn star would help a governor's career.
Stu
RealHousewife,
Go forward with the Barney thing. Maybe I can use it to replace Leahy, Sanders, or Welch.
Stu
Now posing for a boudoir shot as a birthday or anniversary gift for your wife is not porn!
Just like feathers are not kinky - you have to use the whole chicken to be kinky!
Austinstar,
Good point. Maybe that's what Spitzer was really doing, but everyone misunderstood.
Stu
GREAT HUB.WISH I WAS IN TEXAS.
RH - What frog is chasing me?
Hi RealHo (hehe),
Are you referring to Frog Prince?
Stu
Just redid my hub profile and making sure the link to this fabulous hub still works! You are the bestest hub friend ever!
I love this interview! Real you are truly a talented writer. I'm going to follow your friend so I can read more witty hubs! Keep up the great work!!!
Yes, i must come back from time to time just to read the glowing description of myself by Real. And to watch the Dwayne Johnson video (yum!)
Um yes I did watch the video. Nice!!
Oh my Kelly. This was great reading your interview with Lela n all, she is so very talented. Okay, are you ready for this: AP here is a Libra: Aqua is the birthstone of his, ahem, current friend: 8 is his lucky number, and Anne is the name of his sister. Coincidence, I dunno know..whew!
Haha-got the aqua birthstone mixed up with someone else, but still.....
It's an opal, right? At least that's what I've always been told.
I once dated and nearly married another Libra. We were way too compatible :-)
It is aqua!! Its Aquamarine-March! Hoary sheeet!!! That's all of em Kelly. You may have to re-think that Libra compatibility Lela.

Just Ask Susan Level 8 Commenter 12 months ago
This was awesome! I just happened to start following Austinstar and I now know so much more about her. Just had to hit all the buttons here RH. Fantastic JOB!!!!!
