Sneaky Subliminal Messages
88You Saw What You Didn't See
Subliminal Messages are a means of communicating with others by sending messages that pass below the threshold of our conscious mind. It isn't debatable that we have basically two levels of awareness - conscious and unconscious. Subliminal messages are designed to persuade you to act in some way that benefits another without them really asking your permission. Subliminal messages are planted in the mind without your consent or knowledge. They are invented to make you have favor for something or to persuade you to dislike something.
Subliminal messages have been used in advertising and experimental research (mental training). It has been said that there are only two types of subliminal messages. Auditory and visual. Our sense of smell can also have an impact on how we feel. One researcher experimented with scents of lemon, sweat and a neutral scent while he flashed photographs of different faces. Turns out people don't like stinky people. You will win more friends if you smell like a fruit.

What Do You Think?
The idea of subliminal messages is rooted in Greek history. In Greek Mythology, Athena gives Nausicaa a message in a dream. She tells her to wash her clothing in a stream and this leads to a meeting with Odysseus and her eventual marriage.
In the early the 1900's therapists used a form of whisper therapy. They recorded audio messages that were picked up by the subconscious mind while flying under the radar of the conscious mind. The therapy was thought to improve distressful behavior. There are subliminal weight loss programs and I checked into the reviews and while there were several 5 star reviews (?) there were a dozen reviews that thought this product was a rip off. One person said she slept better but gained weight.
In the 1920's people were panic stricken when the BBC began to broadcast on the radio for the first time. The mainstream public was certain the devils voice was coming out of that box. People were very suspicious of the intention of the BBC and they feared they were being manipulated.
In 1957, James Vicary gained notoriety and fame when he announced to the world that he had found a way to prompt the patrons of the movie theater he owned to buy popcorn and soda. He insisted his sales increased by 58% when he flashed the message "Drink Coca Cola and Eat Popcorn" for just 1/2000 - 1/3000 of a second. He admitted later that it was a hoax and he had lied about the entire contention.
Subliminal Messages In Music
Subliminal Messages in Music
Subliminal messages have been embedded in music. It is called 'backmasking' or 'reverse speech'. December 23, 1985 would be the day that would begin the historical trial of James Vance and the family of Raymond Belcamp vs. Judas Priest and CBS. The two boys spent the day drinking beer and smoking pot. They vandalized their own homes and property and then went to a local church playground. They each used the same 12 gauge shot gun to shoot themselves under the chin. Vance survived for three years and slipped into a coma and died.
Prior to his death, Vance gave interviews claiming they had been listening to Judas Priest music which caused them to create a suicide pact. Vance insisted that the song Better By You, Better By Me has a subliminal message that is hidden in the song repeats "do it, do it." when played backward. Vance contends messages in these songs programmed him and his friend to pull the trigger. In 1990, the case was dismissed by Judge Judy Whitehead who ruled there was no conclusive evidence of subliminal messages.

Subliminal Messages In Advertising
While the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) prohibit the use of subliminal messages it is very difficult to prove in a court of law. The evidence is too circumstantial. Advertisers will agree that the power of suggestion will create imaginary visions if you stare at anything for too long.
In 1978, KAKE T.V. in Wichita, Kansas got special permission to air a subliminal message aimed at the BTK Killer to try to persuade him to turn himself in. The hidden message was, "Now Call the Chief". BTK must not have been watching television because it did not work.
In 2000 during the Bush/Gore campaign an advertisement hit the air and while Al Gore was speaking the word bureaucrats was supposed to flash across the screen. The word RATS was buried in there instead. The problem was, whoever embedded that into the film allowed it to run much too long. The ad was noticed, and to date, no one has claimed responsibility.
Subliminal Messages Are Everywhere
Whether subliminal messages are legal or not, they are everywhere. We may not fully understand how the impressions work but the information appears to work by flashing images for fractions of seconds. While it escapes our obvious observation it leaves an imprint in the subconscious mind. This stamp is left there waiting for the moment that it can be employed to control you. No matter how you look at it there is no conscious choice involved.
Still think it isn't real? Consider this - Subliminal Advertising is a multi-million dollar industry each year. Your decision to accept or deny information could be manipulated in a matter of increased shutter speeds, scents or sounds. Your brain absorbs messages and information even when you aren't paying attention. Proof that you are smarter than you think you are!

RealHousewife,
Thanks for publishing this very interesting article. It got me thinking...how many times have I been the *victim* of a subliminal message in advertising? There were occasions when I just "had to" buy a particular item while out on a shopping trip, and I couldn't figure out why.
.....I really do love this hub subject and how you put it all together in such a world class package which will most definitely receive marquee billing on my Facebook page with a direct link back here - you are not only beautiful my dear Miss K - (my heart tells me that everyday) but you are brainy and inspired and full of depth and soul - did I just mention the perfect woman - lol lol - well I guess I just did - and if Martie is reading this - I feel the same way about her too - oh god there's a lot of hot and talented women at the HUB - lucky guy I am for recognizing that fact.

this hub subject may inspire me to write up something of my own - so thanks for that
Excellent article. Thanks for your great work.
I seem to have seen little lights and things flashing behind a TV program. I wonder if TV film makers and program producers are "selling their souls to the devil" and allowing this to go on.
I believe it is illegal (Ha). The god, money, always finds a way. Interesting article...Bob
Hmmm, so if I spray myself with an orange I will make more friends?! Alright! Seriously, this idea of subliminal messages is creepy to me. I read a book once where a mom became a superhero to fight against subliminal messages that were played to children during commercials for a sugar cereal. Turns out the messages were put there by the company that also made the only children's insulin injections. So ...make the kids want sugar cereal, then the parents by it, the kids eat it and get diabetes, the parents pay for the insulin! I know it's far-fetched and it was actually a very funny story - but it gets you thinking. Great hub RHW :)
Very nicely written RealHousewife. It's ironic that they tell you that it's illegal, but if the subconscious is receive the message then the conscious mind isn't likely to see it or understand it. Therefore, even if it was considered illegal, how would people even know it was happening, considering the message escapes the conscious mind and goes directly to the subconsciousness. LOL! I'm pretty sure it still goes on, but people would only say that's a conspiracy theory considering it's difficult to prove it's happening. ;) Thank you for a great article. :)
Mathew McConaughey would tend to disagree with you here. He stated once that he liked the "natural" smell of honest sweat and even though he is now pimping for some cologne or other, I agree with him. Mostly because most perfumes, even fruity ones make me gag.
There is a particular perfume/cologne that I am so allergic to that with just one tiny whiff, my throat starts closing up, I start gagging and nearly pass out. It has patchouli in it and I cannot understand why anyone would want to wear this stuff. It smells like rotten garbage to me.
Please people, do not wear this perfume/cologne. You have no idea how bad it smells to me. I am not the only one either. Oh lord, I should write a hub just on this particular subject, but I couldn't do the research to find out the exact name of the stuff.
Anyway, nice hub RHW :-)
Subliminal Messages!!!! Hahahahaha!!! I always loved this topic :-) Although it is creepy... still it is said that many advertisers add subliminal messages in between all the flashing pictures so that you want to buy their product. Anyways... I totally forgot what I was saying because I received a phone call and some bad news between my comment so today will be a pathetic comment in comparison to most of mine. So another great hub. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next one :-)
We are indeed all influenced by the messages that bombard us each day to such an extent that we make them subliminal! LOL! The advertisers no longer need to hide their messages for us to buy all they have to do is keep sticking their ads into our faces until we push them below the level of our conscious awareness where they then infiltrate the subconscious. Brilliant isn't it? A great hub excellently researched and presented. Thank you.
I love the idea behind sublmiinal messages. I just think it is amazing how powerful our unconscious mind really is. After all, isn't that really what hypnosis is all about. It is about giving yourself a message and letting your mind take control. However, if your not in agreeance than it wouldn't work. So, if you would never eat popcorn or drink soda, chances are good that a subliminal message won't change that! :) Great hub!
I don't know why, but after reading this hub I think RHW is the freaking BOMB, the hubber of all hubbers! She be pimpin' hubs and kickin' ass! She has my vote for President.
Tell me.....Who do you want killed? :)
Hey RH, good research on an interesting topic. I'm sure no one we knowreadwinsome is doing this. With the advent of thereadwinsome internet, there is so much more controlreadwinsome by the user that minimizes hanky panky.
Still, I willreadwinsome be on the lookout for any instances and get back to you. =:)
OMG - it is so funny that you mentioned McDonald's - after working out I was watching some TV and suddenly had a craving for a Big Mac. Then I was also wondering.... has my psychotic obsession with my workouts due to subliminal messages in P90X... I guess there are worse subliminal messages other than keep going and workout though... lol... so if there is I wouldn't mind!
in complete agreement with all you say. this is all part of the worldwide current rend in which solid reliability, solid content et all are no longer kings. what matters is how well and how strongly you can manipulate. whether you manipulate voters, governments or consumers is not important what is important is that you get what you want- by hook or by crook- even if it clearly harming everyone but you.
a sad commentary on our times but nevertheless true.
Fascinating subject you have chosen, Kelly, amd interesting information. If it were not for the power of suggestion and subliminal messages, all those of us who use hypnotism in our work would be looking for other means of support.
RHW - Somewhere in all of that is the subliminal message you tucked into this Hub. Where's it at Toots?
The Frog
RWH - It's good that you blabbed. Ve haff veys to make you talk you know?

This subject has always fascinated me. How much are we being affected from subliminal messaging, we'll probably never know the full extent. When I was little I remember first learning about it from an episode of Columbo. The murderer was caught from his own advertising campaign of subliminal messaging. The brain is an amazing organ:)
Subliminal affects can go beyond words. Sight tends to trigger auto thoughts such as things like the colors used in fast food signs and ads that trigger hunger, to the lighting and arrangements in stores that trigger spontaneous purchases. I do often find myself wondering if my thoughts are just my own. It can become kind of scary and present a feeling of schizophrenia if thought about too much!
Great - now I got over my ... place I will not say... craving and I come back to read your response... and now I have a craving for... place I will not say... all over again... (sigh)
did you put accidental subliminal messages in here? LOL
A cat huh? Well I do use dog shampoo and lick myself. Ha Ha! :)
Moxie is a girl actually. Everyone thinks she's a male though. She was doing just that.........turning to look at me. I said her name so she would turn. I've gotten her to lick the side of her nose for a picture too.
Don't let her looks fool you. She can be ferocious. Especially when you try to take her treat away. The little turd nipped at me. I don't do that anymore.
Kinda makes you wonder just who's getting trained around here. :) I respond to her more than she does to me. Ha Ha.
Hey Kelly as far as the coke and popcorn thing go when i worked at a movie theater we tried that with a frame of film that said 'Drink Coca-Cola' and if i recall right nothing out of the ordinary happened. Maybe shoulda been two frames. Backmasking: how can anyone deny that on songs like Stairway to Heaven- plain as day if one listens carefully, especially with Pages involvement in black magic and such. And last but not least: The SpongeBob show was in the news recently concerning a little subliminal messaging problem to the young folk; imagine that! PS- appreciate you taking advantage of your free movie pass Kelly; hope to have the theater looking spiffy before long.:)
That's why I named her Moxie. She's not afraid to growl at the very large rotweiler in the neighborhood when he comes close to her. His name is O.J.
She will also start to growl at me if I haven't given her any attention for a while. Either that or she'll jump on the back of the couch and stick her nose in my ear. LOL
A fascinating subject. So many comments that I read through I've forgotten what I was going to say now. Lol
I am sure subliminal messaging does happen all the time. But far worse than us shoppers being manipulated into purchasing a particular product or brand is the possibility of subliminal messages being hidden in the computer games that so many children play. Now that thought is scary. Maybe a message that will be triggered enmasse at a later date, doesn't bear thinking about.
I guess we can say a thank you to Hubpages though for dragging us away from the TV. Lol
Great hub
YOu know I try to stay away from the forums but this one I just had to participate in... when it comes to paying it forward... I couldn't think of any one better that I would have like to say is my favorite hubber :)
Ok - so now is the evil part... you are going to have to search for it because I don't know where it disappeared to... one of the reasons I stay away from the forums! LOL
I find the idea interesting. I used a lot of reverse psychology on my kids, does that count?...LOL! I don't know if it is true or not, but I noticed that if I am reading a book where the character is eating a lot, I have the urge to dig around in my fridge till I find some munchies. Flashy pictures just give me a headache, so I try to avoid them. As for smells, I once was using an organic hand lotion that smelled like roses. It was so strong, it set my hubby's allergies off. Hmm, I wonder if they would call that a subliminal message?...Great hub!
Very interesting hub!
Interesting hub, voted up. I've studied subliminal suggestions in school - well actually it was one talk, and it was very interesting. I think though that things don't have to be subliminal to work. If you actually post a popcorn and soda ad, I'm sure there will be people who will want them. I know I get hungry when I watch TV because of all their food commercials.
Lately I've been hearing more chimes and ringing and honking in commercials - probably to get us to pay attention, since we do listen for those in real life.
Excellent and interesting hub. Lots of information that makes me feel like certain groups of advertisers think we are like a flock of sheep. Liked the videos you included. Voted up and very interesting.
I find this a fascinating topic from a science perspective. It's amazing what we can pick up subconsciously at times.
I appreciate the history you brought to this topic - very nicely done!
Bill Hicks, the late comedian, is a personal hero of mine - if you haven't seen it, then he's got a skit about the Judas Priest thing, and I totally concur with the Late Mr. Hicks about how ridiculous that whole deal was.
....musicians telling the persons that purchase their music to kill themselves - is completely ridiculous.
...but please do not think that I mean subliminal messages don't exists - I think they are everywhere, and I've discovered them in some very strange places.
"Circumstantial" - big problem, but I'm certain that in advertising people are paid directly for the inclusion of subliminals in adverts...specifically, the old "skulls in the ice cubes" thing....on Coke or Soda adverts in magazines - you can clearly see those things, and there is no doubt in my mind that the majority of them are there deliberately.
I could go on forever here in this comment - but that might be a bit annoying!!!!!!!!!
Let me just add here that sex and death are extreme emotional points for the majority of humanity, and those two themes are used in a huge way in all advertising....each and every single time someone can get away with it.
Here is the deal - it is different for everyone, and at some times some are more able to be influenced than at other times.
Literally - I am a drug addict, and I know from my experiences that when I am lite up like Christmas - I am WAY MORE SENSITIVE to subliminal stuff.
(....backs away slowly - hopes he didn't alarm you)
Seriously - intoxication will do it for some persons - but other persons are just "wired differently" - so while you and I sober ...the stuff is a joke - if either of us were in a more emotionally sensitive state - things change, and we could be more influenced by such.
Okay - I ...well, this is what I do, I'm the guy who makes monster comments.
What an excellent hub RHW :) Ok I have to admit it I'm pretty thick headed when it comes to this stuff. I only get it when it jumps out from the tv and bites me in the butt. So if you want a date, send text with " I want date", don't show me a vt with an old man and a curvacious beautiful woman holding hands on the beach smelling of fruit cake lol, with the words underneath saying, 'it's never to late to find your perfect match' voted up awesome:) wink wink did you get that!!
.....the point about men...I agree!
I mean....I very often think women are forever hinting at things rather than just out and saying it...but of course I've usually got something in mind that I'd like them to up and say!!!!!!!! So...um...I might have a bit much in the imagination.
"Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" - King Henry, following the English Civil war between Maude and King Stephen....a bunch of male political favor chasers thought Henry had said, "which one of you is going to kill Thomas Becket for me?
....
What is really neat is if you know someone really really well, and that person's brain is wired somewhat similar to your own...in such cases you can have entire and lengthy conversations that were the feds recording...they'd never figure out what was said or meant. ...as close friends and similar minds can transcend the dull rules of language with free associations conversations!
I need a wife with a big credit card that I can use for ...eh, life is so full of games.
I just want to be me.
I also think you are smarter than I am...probably everyone is. I was mind warped into thinking I was "Mr. Genius +" from an early age.
Kelly,
it's not surpring that we can see messages flashed only for 1000th of a second as we can process something like 10,000 impressions a second. Notice when you are driving, for instance when you are scanning the road in front on a highway when cars are overtaking you. Instinctively you know at aglance what the letters of the licence plates on some cars are. You wonder why but it is because you glanced at the car for a split second and it registered in your sub conscious and you recalled the digits even before you remember even looking at the plate.....awesome computer is the human brain.
Wow excellent work.
You get all the votes .

Well, I had heard about the movie theater popcorn/soda thing; hoax or not--it's been around in several versions, some claim just a flash of an image of the popcorn--no need to flash soda, because popcorn will then make the patrons thirsty... True or not? Possible, but who knows?
As far as the "playing music backwards" thing goes...how would you even DO that? IF you have professional level equipment, it is possible to play AUDIO TAPES backwards...I had to do it in broadcast class, to cue up a particular song segment. But I'm here to tell you, it was very, very difficult to "understand" anything at all being said, so finding the correct cue spot was hard, let alone finding "hidden" messages.
However, it is NOT possible to play vinyl or CD's backwards, so I think that one is a lot of malarkey.
A lot of the other stuff, though, does happen. This is an interesting field of study. And, just because the government bans something--does NOT mean they are not fiddling with it themselves--probably the reverse is true.
Voted up and interesting.
