Where to Find Gold!
87Be A Gold Digger!
Gold is one of the most precious metals on earth and it is everywhere! It could be right under your feet. It is estimated that only 5% of the worlds gold has been found to date and there are deposits virtually everywhere around the world waiting to be discovered. The price of gold is increasing as well and the top financial experts agree that it is one of the best investments you can add to your portfolio as the dollar becomes more and more unstable.
Gold is expensive and buyers looking to purchase a bullion may have to wait for periods as long as one month as the supply can't currently meet the demand. If you can't afford to purchase gold - why not find it? It's good to be a gold digger!

Turn A Hobby Into A Gold Find!
Metal detectors have been around since the first one was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1881. A better, more portable version wasn't made until 1931. They have now become very easy to operate and vary in price ranges and features depending upon what you are looking for.
Metal detectors are made to find things under the ground that are hidden from our vision. There are several different makers and manufacturers and there are about 5 different basic types of detectors. The basic type for an amateur seems to be a general purpose detector that will alert you to many types of coins, relics and treasures. They can identify types of metals such as gold, silver, iron, lead, bronze, brass, aluminum, iron, nickle and copper. They will not work on objects such as pearls, precious gems or paper money. In general most of them will detect metal objects upto 12 inches underground depending on which type you decide to purchase.
Metal detectors can be purchased with filters and options that can allow you to differentiate better between trash and treasure. The sensors can break down the amount and mixtures of different metals in the objects you can't see. The frequency the detectors operate at are important to study. Lower frequencies are supposed to be more sensitive to objects that are made of metals such as copper and silver. Filtering can also affect things like protection for depth and trash rejection, for example.
There are many clubs and tours that a prospector can join to learn more about tips and techniques. Digging for gold is a hobby that people share all over the globe. It isn't an expensive hobby and you do not have to continually purchase items to add to your collection. You find them for free in your spare time and add money to your collection rather than spending to buy another item.
The basic items a gold digger needs are:
- A book about gold coins and prospecting
- A good map of the area you will be searching
- A Compass (and know how to use it!)
- A metal detector (consult an expert to find out which is best for you)
- Small digging equipment such as a spade or trowel
- A means of communication with the outside world for your safety
As you can see anyone, including children, can enjoy this hobby. It is fun for the entire family.

Searching for buried treasure is a great hobby but before you go prospecting you will need to make sure you are careful about where you search. Permission is necessary to search anyone else's property - especially if you plan to dig on the land and take something away. If the area you are interested in is privately owned you will need to ask the owner or manager of the property for permission.
It is almost always illegal to search on land that has been deemed Historical property.
If the land is owned by the city a good start might be your local Parks and Recreation Department. If the State or Federal government owns the property you might get help by asking the groundskeeper or whoever supervises the property.
Treasure hunting can be addictive and while I advocate this as a recreational hobby some people to to extremes and their lives become a quest for the big find. People have died and been injured on their thirst for lost valuables. A 28 year old woman in Tokyo saw the movie Fargo and died in her quest to find the million bucks that she was sure was buried in the woods in the North Dakota snow. This is a true story. Apparently even authorities and her friends tried to convince her that the movie wasn't real. She died trying to prove them wrong. Have fun in your search but don't get too greedy!

I bought a metal detector years ago to search the ranch here. I found an old tractor seat, a really old and very small stirrup from a saddle, a few rusty nails and flotsam. It was fun.
Supposedly, I live in the general area where the outlaw Sam Bass was supposed to have hidden his stolen $20 gold pieces (75 of them). He took them from a Wells Fargo stagecoach and they have never been recovered.
I'm also suspiciously positive there is a cave hidden on my property. I called the TX spelunker society but they never came out. I should try again. Maybe the Sam Bass gold is in the cave!
Oh, I totally want to do this!!! I bet nobody's ever searched my 15 acres and I could be sitting on a gold mine. Could you imagine?! I'd still write of course but I'd have a much nicer office :D
Hey RealHousewife, pretty cool hub. I used to sell metal detectors in one of the jobs I had and the stories I had customers come back and tell me were pretty cool. I had once thought about using a metal detector as a hobby, but it was something that came and went. LOL! :) Great hub and thank you for adding my hub. :) Voted up! :)
I would love to go gold digging. I think that sounds really fun :-) Of course making money on the side wouldn't be bad either ;-) Very interesting hub... i didn't realize how little of the world's gold has been found. Another fun topic and entertaining hub :-)
My husband retired from the military when he was 45. I wanted to get him a metal detector, but he found out (loud mouth kids) and told me he didn't want to be an old man in the park with his metal detector. LOL I on the other hand think it would be great fun!! I love to find four leaf clovers, so using a metal detector would probably be obsessive about it. :-) Great hub! Voted up!!
A well written and most informative hub. I know a man who has one of these and he uses it on the beach. He has found all sorts of things especially coins that people have dropped but no gold nuggets. He loves it and I suppose it is a form of self hypnosis. It keeps him out of the pub and it is an excuse for him to get out of the house :)
Al and the boys watch that TV show Gold Rush Alaska. Now they want to go and dig for gold. My mother in law bought a metal detector and she did find on the beach in Florida a bracelet that appeared to be diamonds, only later to find out they were zirconia, but good quality ones. At one time at Knotts Berry Farm in California they had gold panning, not sure if anyone every actual found anything though.
Very recently two men found a little gold in the desert here. voted up and interesting
Wow the Fargo thing is unreal. Hard to believe someone could be that naive, or maybe locos the right word. Great info on the metal detectors. Saw the other day where a man discovered a Saxon gold hoard in England with one.
Hi RHW,
Such a wonderful piece of information esp in this recession...lol
These days even burglars come with a metal detector. That way they are faster in getting this metal :)
Loved the information and how you presented it. voted up by clicking the interesting button.
i know an easier way to dig for gold.
get introduced to your local multi millionaires widow and get married to her.

Even better tips than those from Yukon Cornelius! This is a wonderful hub. If you don't mind, I am going to link it to my hub on the value of gold. It rocks!
Great hub, have to show it to my husband, since he always says ever since he was a child he dreamed about having a metal detector. May be we'll make it the family hobby. Voted up.
I have been watching on TV these places you can go where there is for sure gold and you buy a bucket of dirt for about $5 or so and go through it, you know as the gold diggers use to with a pan and water rinsing over. I would so love to do that.
Fun hub!
Unfortunately, there is no metal detector that can tell the difference between a gold nugget and a horseshoe nail. They are a lot of fun, but the only sure way is to dig up every target.
I carry two bags when I'm coin shooting; one for trash and one for valuables. Guess which one fills up first?
Surprise, Kelly! You have won the WWHAFBT. What is it? The World Wide Hubbers Award For Best Title. This was the most intriguing title I've seen in all my borned days. Your views should be astounding. Congrats. And thanks for the info about treasure finders, too.
Ok - this is so odd... I read this last week... and I stopped back into check and I didn't comment. That is so unlike me. I must have gotten distracted! :)
I have always wanted a metal detector. I have seen people with them on the beaches before. I just think it would be cool to find little treasures, but like you said, it is very important to not get carried away. What a fun hub! :)
Wait wait... will the metal detector be able to detect an earing... what if it isn't "real" metal! LOL Maybe I should bring it to vegas and see if I can find my earing I lost there! LOL
I love gold. Lots of gold. I should get myself a gold detector!:)
Kel ~ It took me a couple weeks to comment because I have been searching for gold in my back yard. All I can say is the dog crap is now cleaned up :)
Seriously, very cool hub. Why didn't I think of this? I shared this on Pinterest and there already is a comment. But somehow, the pic that shared with it is your pic. And the comment is from a woman who wants your t-shirt, ha!
I working on my husband to think about developing this new hobby But he is not biting. LOL
Gold is the true currency of the world, and will forever be. Great article.
Morning RealHousewife... Thank you for finding and following me. This is a great hub and I agree with you there is gold all around you if you are willing to find it.
I lived in the Yukon years ago and virtually every wate way had colour if you took the time and effort to pan for it. Once you have the fever it is hard not to get hooked.

OK Kelly....Effer here, is about to get REAL corny..so hang on.....I found gold when I found HubPages and all the fascinating people and interesting things to read and learn and share!!! That was my GOLD for 2011-12....
I've found mountains and mountains of gold at other times in other places.....but not that I can turn in for cash!!
I know a lot of people with a heart of gold....and couples about to celebrate their Golden Anniversary....2 of the cutest Golden Retriever puppies up the street...and once in awhile I'll play the GOLD RUSH scratch-off lottery...and my favorite music is Golden Oldies...I know silence is Golden and now and then I enjoy the quiet. I hear "there's Gold in them thar hills,"..but also bears and snakes and spooky things! I had a Gold car once but it was really a piece of junk.
Yeah...there's LOTS of Gold all around us, Kelly. I thought I'd take this Golden Opportunity to tell you this is a GEM of a HUB!!! UP+++
Hello Realhouse wife,
This hub caught my attention because my husband loves metal detecting. In fact is was featured in a Garret book when he was little for being one of the youngest treasure hunters in the early 70's. His dad and him shared many days of metal detecting. He keeps saying he wants to pick it up again and teach me more about it..I have went a few times. We do most of our hunting on line now for treasures that people want to sale..We now have a business on ebay called RK Treasure center and he is forever posting coins or buying them. Have sold scrapes of gold and silver which do make a little money. It is amazing. Thank you for sharing such a great hub. I will send this to my husband to read too.
Hugs,
Sunnie

Fun! We have a metal detector, and is is supposed to discriminate for gold. When using it on the beach some years back, we discovered that there is apparently "some" real gold (gold leaf, perhaps?) in the foil that covers champagne bottle corks, for those are what we unearthed when the "gold" sound went off. We were somewhat nonplussed at this discovery.
I plan to get the thing out again, for we live in a sandy area...should be interesting.
